An Unusual Cause of Laryngotracheobronchitis
We present a case of pseudomembranous cryptococcal laryngotracheobronchitis in an 80-year-old woman with a history of intractable cough with production of long sputum strings and severe dysphonia. Her main risk factor was considered to be the use of high-dose inhaled fluticasone, given for severe mixed asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is an unusual presentation of pulmonary cryptococcal disease, which commonly presents as parenchymal disease. We also present a review of the published case reports of endobronchial and laryngeal cryptococcal disease. (Source: Clinical Microbiology Newsletter)

Some HIV-infected patients with certain gene at increased risk for fungal disease
HIV-infected people who carry a gene for a specific protein face a 20-fold greater risk of contracting cryptococcal disease, according to a study published in mBio®, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. Cryptococcus neoformans is the most common cause of fungal meningitis among HIV-infected individuals. While the disease is a risk for everyone with HIV who has a very low level of CD4+ T cells, researchers have discovered that those with the gene for the protein FCGR3A 158V have an immune cell receptor that binds tightly to antibody-bound C... Susceptibility to deadly fungal infection increased by methamphetamine
Methamphetamine use can make a person more susceptible to the lung infection cryptococcosis, according to a study published in mBio®, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. Researchers found that injected methamphetamine (METH) significantly enhanced colonization of the lungs by Cryptococcus neoformans and accelerated progression of the disease and the time to death in mouse models. Cryptococcosis and Meningitis
"Cryptococcosis," is an infection that is caused when a person inhales the fungus, "Cryptococcus Neoformans." The disease most often affects people with AIDS. While it might be limited to a person's lungs, it frequently spreads throughout a person's body. Although nearly any organ in the body can become infected, the fungus is often times fatal if it infects a person's nervous system where it causes an inflammation of the membranes covering the spinal cord and brain - referred to as, "meningitis."
