Cryotherapy after Topical Interferon Alpha 2b to Treat Conjunctival Primary Acquired Melanosis
When primary acquired melanosis (PAM) with atypia affects the tarsal conjunctiva, a radical surgery can be mutilating, requiring reconstructive surgery of the eyelid. Topical chemotherapy associated to local cryotherapy may be an alternative. A 64-year-old Caucasian female presented with diffuse PAM of the right eye involving the inferior tarsal conjunctiva, fornix, and inferotemporal bulbar conjunctiva. Histological study showed a PAM with atypia (C-MIN 5). Given the extent of the lesion and its location, a wide mutilating excision was ruled out. Topical interferon alpha 2b (IFN- α2b) treatment (1,000,000 IU/mL, 4 times ...

Dysphagia (dys) palliation in inoperable esophageal cancer (EC) continues to be a challenge. While chemotherapy and radiation help with dys, many patients require endoscopic interventions. Self-expanding metal stents have been the mainstay for endoscopic palliation but have a significant risk of adverse events (AEs), including reflux. Liquid nitrogen spray Cryotherapy (cryo) is an established modality that can be used with ST. Retrospective studies showed improvement in dys with a favorable AE profile but did not report on quality of life (QoL) in patients receiving ST. (Source: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)

Follow-up of retinoblastoma using RetCam fluorescein angiography and correlation with clinical findings
CONCLUSION: RetCam wide-angle FA is useful to evaluate the tumor and associated vascular and retinal changes after treatment in RB. Regressed tumors demonstrate later fluorescein uptake in venous phases. Fluorescein angiographic changes in chorioretinal scars include window defects, visibility of choroidal vessels, scleral staining, and leakage from vessels. Retinal vascular leakage and peripheral non-perfusion can be seen in eyes with regressed stable tumors.PMID:36935642 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231163619 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Years of dermatology experience and geographic region are associated with outlier performance of excision or destruction for nonmelanoma skin cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Dermatologists with less experience or in certain geographic regions performed more malignant excision relative to destruction. As the older population of dermatologists retires, the cost of care for NMSC may increase.PMID:36932466 | DOI:10.1080/09546634.2023.2192839 (Source: Journal of Dermatological Treatment)

Contemporary patterns of local ablative therapies for prostate cancer at United States cancer centers: results from a national registry
ConclusionsLocal ablative therapy for PCa treatment is more commonly offered among older and comorbid patients. Future studies should investigate the uptake of these technologies in non-hospital-based settings and in light of recent changes in insurance coverage. (Source: World Journal of Urology)

Advances in conjunctival melanoma: clinical features, diagnostic modalities, staging, genetic markers, and management
Can J Ophthalmol. 2023 Mar 12:S0008-4182(23)00043-1. doi: 10.1016/j.jcjo.2023.02.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConjunctival melanoma, a rare malignancy of the ocular surface, is increasing in incidence. When small, straightforward excision with "no touch" surgery and cryotherapy at an experienced centre can provide excellent outcomes. When advanced, management is more complex and highly individualized. The risk of metastatic disease from conjunctival melanoma is as high as 30% and depends on tumour origin, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) classification, biomarkers, and perhaps most important, management tech...

Keloid treatments: an evidence-based systematic review of recent advances
ConclusionsThis review was limited by heterogeneity of subject characteristics and study outcome measures, small sample sizes, and inconsistent study designs. Larger and more robust controlled studies are necessary to further understand the variety of existing and emerging keloid treatments, including corticosteroids, cryotherapy, intralesional injections, lasers, photodynamic therapy, excision and radiation, pressure dressings, and others. The relationship of apparent diffusion coefficient values of renal cell carcinoma before and after cryotherapy ablation
Implications for practice DWI is a quick addition to routine protocols, does not require intravenous gadolinium based contrast agent, and provides qualitative and quantitative data. Further research is required to establish the role of ADC for treatment monitoring. (Source: Radiography)

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 2690: A Fiber Optic Sensor for Monitoring the Spectral Alterations and Depth in Ex Vivo and In Vivo Cryosurgery
This article discusses how to monitor the freezing depth during cryotherapy using a fiber optic array sensor. The sensor was used to measure the backscattered and transmitted light from frozen and unfrozen ex vivo porcine tissue and in vivo human skin tissue (finger). The technique exploited the variations in optical diffusion properties of the frozen and unfrozen tissues to determine the extent of freezing. Ex vivo and in vivo measurements yielded comparable results, despite spectral variations attributable to the hemoglobin absorption peak in the human frozen and unfrozen tissues. However, because the spectral fingerprin...

Acute Ankle Sprain in Elite Athletes
Despite the high frequency of ankle sprains, the ideal management is controversial, and a significant percentage of patients sustaining an ankle sprain never fully recover. There is strong evidence that residual disability of ankle joint injury is often caused by an inadequate rehabilitation and training program and early return to sports. Therefore, the athlete should start their criteria-based rehabilitation and gradually progress through the programmed activities, including cryotherapy, edema relief, optimal weight-bearing management, range of motion exercises for ankle dorsiflexion improvement, triceps surae stretching...

Previous therapy and the recurrence rate of basal cell carcinoma after Mohs surgery: a meta-analysis
This study aimed to examine how preoperative treatment before MMS affects the recurrence rate after surgery. We conducted a meta-analysis to compare the recurrence rates of primary BCC and previously treated BCC in patients undergoing MMS, with a 5-year follow-up. The secondary outcomes were the recurrence rate after MMS based on previous radiation therapy status, mean time to recurrence, and number of cases undergoing more than one stage of MMS. The recurrence rate in the previously treated group was 2.44 times greater than that of the primary BCC group. In the previous treatment group, the patients who underwent previous...
