Clinical outcomes and anticoagulation therapy in elderly non ‐valvular atrial fibrillation and heart failure patients
ConclusionsNon-valvular AF patients aged ≥75 years with a history of HF had higher risks of cardiovascular events and mortality. DOACs were favourable to warfarin regardless of the coexistence of HF. These results might encourage the use of DOACs in elderly patients with non-valvular AF with or without HF. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Genetic Determinants of Response to Statins in Cardiovascular Diseases
Curr Cardiol Rev. 2024 Jan 9. doi: 10.2174/011573403X267793231220114042. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite extensive efforts to identify patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) who could most benefit from the treatment approach, patients vary in their benefit from therapy and propensity for adverse drug events. Genetic variability in individual responses to drugs (pharmacogenetics) is considered an essential determinant in responding to a drug. Thus, understanding these pharmacogenomic relationships has led to a substantial focus on mechanisms of disease and drug response. In turn, understanding the genomic and mole...

Guiding warfarin self-management in children: development of a warfarin nomogram
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that this pediatric nomogram is a suitable tool for warfarin dosing, as recommended warfarin doses matched the majority of clinicians' decisions. Modification may be needed to nomogram recommendations for the time to retest. This nomogram can be used to support warfarin self-management and may assist clinicians and patients or families in making evidence-based dosing decisions.PMID:38193059 | PMC:PMC10772892 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2023.102255 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Comparison of vitamin K and non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants and the bleeding frequency in the emergency department
ConclusionMonitoring the frequency of bleeding and bleeding-related symptoms in patients on oral anticoagulant therapy as a reason for emergency department attendance may be a new safety and efficacy factor in real-life patient scenarios. (Source: High Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Prevention)

Short-term antiplatelet versus anticoagulant therapy after left atrial appendage closure: a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractThis meta-analysis compared the efficacy and safety of different antithrombotic regimens after left atrial appendage closure (LAAC).  PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched from their inception to March 2023. Patients were divided into short-term oral anticoagulation (OAC) group and antiplatelet therapy (APT) group. The incidence of events were performed using RevMan 5.4. The events incl uding device-related thrombus (DRT), ischemic stroke/systemic embolization (SE), major bleeding, any bleeding, any major adverse event and all-cause mortality. Subgroup analysis were based...

Factors Associated With Oral Anticoagulant Use in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Mental Disorders
Conclusions: An OAC treatment gap for AF patients with comorbid SMI relative to other mental illnesses was identified. The gap was wider in those with dependence comorbidities, positive symptoms, self-injury, or functional impairment.J Clin Psychiatry 2024;85(1):23m14824.Author affiliations are listed at the end of this article.PMID:38175946 | DOI:10.4088/JCP.23m14824 (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychiatry)

Association between rates of ischemic stroke and all-cause mortality with the Watchman device compared to warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants in patients with atrial fibrillation
CONCLUSION: While DOACs were associated with lower ischemic stroke rates, treatment with the Watchman device was associated with lower all-cause mortality. Patients placed on the Watchman device due to DOAC contraindications may benefit from its lower all-cause mortality risk.PMID:38174006 | PMC:PMC10761157 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2023.2269354 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)
