SARS-CoV-2 infection induces thymic atrophy mediated by IFN- γ in hACE2 transgenic mice
Eur J Immunol. 2024 Apr 24:e2350624. doi: 10.1002/eji.202350624. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPathogenic infections cause thymic atrophy, perturb thymic T-cell development, and alter immunological response. Previous studies reported dysregulated T-cell function and lymphopenia in coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). However, immunopathological changes in the thymus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection have not been elucidated. Here, we report that SARS-CoV-2 infects thymocytes, and induces CD4+CD8+ (double positive; DP) T-cell apoptosis leading to thymic atrophy and loss of ...

Coronavirus Anxiety, COVID Anxiety Syndrome and Mental Health: A Test Among Six Countries During March 2021
Clin Psychol Psychother. 2024 Mar-Apr;31(2):e2988. doi: 10.1002/cpp.2988.ABSTRACTThe negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health outcomes is widely documented. Specifically, individuals experiencing greater degrees of severity in coronavirus anxiety have demonstrated higher levels of generalized anxiety, depression and psychological distress. Yet the pathways in which coronavirus anxiety confers vulnerability are not well known. The present investigation sought to address this gap in the scientific literature by testing the indirect effect of the COVID-19 anxiety syndrome, which centres on the function of det...

Impact of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines on Covid-19 incidence and mortality in the United States
ConclusionsAssociations between complete vaccination rates and COVID-19 incidence and mortality appeared to vary with shifts in the dominant variant, perhaps due to variations in vaccine efficacy by variant or to waning vaccine immunity over time. Vaccine boosters were associated with notable protection against Omicron disease and mortality. (Source: PLoS One)

Use of Respiratory and Contact Precautions to Decrease the Spread of SARS-CoV-2 Infection Was Not Associated with a Decrease in Endometritis –Intra-Amniotic Infection
Conclusion The use of respiratory and contact precautions to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2 was not associated with risk of endometritis/IAI. Exogenous Insulin Antibody Syndrome (EIAS) Presenting in an Elderly, Long-Term Patient with Type  1 Diabetes Mellitus that Resolved with Low-Cost Outpatient Therapy with Mycophenolate Mofetil and Regular Insulin by Pump
AbstractExogenous insulin antibody syndrome (EIAS) has until recently been a rarely described complication of exogenous insulin therapy. EIAS results not only in hyperglycemia, but also in hypoglycemia and occasionally in ketoacidosis (DKA). The incidence of EIAS is increasing probably due to an overall increase in autoimmunity associated with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) epidemic resulting in increasing binding of insulin by antibodies. Herein, we describe a case of EIAS occurring in an elderly patient with longstanding type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) who had progressive loss of glycemic control. It responded p...

The contributions of vaccination and natural infection to the production of neutralizing antibodies against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) prototype strain and variants
The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic [1-3]. As the pandemic progressed, new, more transmissible but less virulent variants, like the Omicron variant, emerged and became more dominant, further reducing the mortality rate [4-8]. The World Health Organization (WHO) eventually declared that the COVID-19 pandemic no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern on May 2023 [9]. Post-COVID Trajectory of Pentraxin 3 Plasma Levels Over 6 Months and Their Association with the Risk of Developing Post-Acute Depression and Anxiety
ConclusionsA lower reduction of plasma PTX3 after acute COVID-19 associates with the presence of depression and anxiety, suggesting an involvement of inflammation in post-COVID-19 psychopathology and a potential role of PTX3 as a biomarker. (Source: CNS Drugs)

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 665: Exploring the Antiviral Potential of Esters of Cinnamic Acids with Quercetin
o Manzin Giuseppina Sanna Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected more than 762 million people to date and has caused approximately 7 million deaths all around the world, involving more than 187 countries. Although currently available vaccines show high efficacy in preventing severe respiratory complications in infected patients, the high number of mutations in the S proteins of the current variants is responsible for the high level of immune evasion and transmissibility of the virus and the reduced effectiveness of acquired immunity. In this scenario, the development of safe...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 659: Design and Application of Biosafe Coronavirus Engineering Systems without Virulence
ingxin Ma In the last twenty years, three deadly zoonotic coronaviruses (CoVs)—namely, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and SARS-CoV-2—have emerged. They are considered highly pathogenic for humans, particularly SARS-CoV-2, which caused the 2019 CoV disease pandemic (COVID-19), endangering the lives and health of people globally and causing unpredictable economic losses. Experiments on wild-type viruses require biosafety level 3 or 4 laboratories (BSL-3 or BSL-4), which significantly hinders basic virological r...

Comparison of effectiveness and safety of molnupiravir versus sotrovimab for COVID ‐19: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionThe current findings indicate that sotrovimab may be more effective than molnupiravir in reducing the mortality rate in COVID-19 patients. However, no statistical difference was observed between the two treatments for other effectiveness outcomes. The certainty of evidence for these findings was rated as low or moderate. Further research is required to provide a better comparison of these interventions in treating COVID-19 patients. (Source: Immunity, Inflammation and Disease)
