Researchers need ‘open’ bibliographic databases, new declaration says
When universities are deciding whom to hire and promote, or grant organizations are selecting projects to fund, there’s a good chance they’re referencing more than just the application materials. Many organizations rely on databases that compile publication information including authors, affiliations, citations, and funding sources to create metrics meant to quantify a researcher’s productivity and the quality of their work. Some of the best known databases, such as the Web of Science and Scopus, are proprietary and offer pay-to-access data and services supporting these and other metrics, including university r...

The role of psychologists in supporting illness-related dying and death: A systematic mixed studies review
Clin Psychol Rev. 2024 Feb 2;110:102393. doi: 10.1016/j.cpr.2024.102393. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPsychologists remain underrepresented in end-of-life care, and there is limited understanding of their role among healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers. This systematic mixed-studies review, prospectively registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020215775), explored the role of psychologists, and the facilitators and barriers they experience, in supporting clients with illness-related dying and death. A search of six research databases was conducted in October 2023. Fifty-one studies, mainly qualitative and from the pers...

Fewer U.S. scientists are pursuing postdoc positions, new data show
Gorodenkoff/Getty Images New data released by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) reveal a sharp drop in the number of U.S. citizens working as postdocs, especially in the biological and biomedical sciences. The trend underscores concerns that the academic community is facing a postdoc shortage and that early-career scientists are increasingly favoring higher paid positions outside academia. “It’s an unfortunate situation if domestic researchers are turning down postdoctoral positions because they’re inferior to positions in government or in industry,” says Tom Kimbis, executi...

Independent evaluation of the COVID-19 crisis. Lessons to be learned
Gac Sanit. 2024 Mar 7;38:102375. doi: 10.1016/j.gaceta.2024.102375. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe independent evaluation report on the performance of the National Health System in the face of the COVID crisis is rigorous, well thought out and well executed. It has benefited from the participation of numerous experts and institutions. The altruistic effort of the coordinators and hundreds of experts, professionals and citizens is noteworthy, which does not justify the asymmetry between "everything for free" when it comes to shared intelligence, and market prices when it comes to commissioning reports from consultancy fi...

Is NASA too down on space-based solar power?
This month, NASA cast a shadow on one of the most visionary prospects for freeing the world from fossil fuels: collecting solar energy in space and beaming it to Earth. An agency report found the scheme is feasible by 2050 but would cost between 12 and 80 times as much as ground-based renewable energy sources. Undaunted, many government agencies and companies are pushing ahead with demonstration plans. Some researchers say NASA’s analysis is too pessimistic. “There are assumptions that are just wrong and others that are incredibly conservative,” says Martin Soltau, co-CEO of Space Solar, a development company f...

Japan tries, again, to stop its universities from sliding down global rankings
Twenty years ago, five universities in Japan were among the world’s top 100, according to an annual compilation by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. The University of Tokyo led the contingent in 19th place, with Kyoto University 30th. But by this year, Tokyo had tumbled to 27th and Kyoto to 39th despite repeated efforts to keep the universities globally competitive. The other three schools dropped out of the top 100 entirely. Now, Japan’s government has launched yet another effort to reverse the widely recognized decline. This month, lawmakers approved legislation that requires six top-ranked universities to...

Saudi universities lose highly cited researchers after payment schemes raise ethics concerns
The number of top researchers affiliated with universities in Saudi Arabia has dropped sharply, months after the institutions were revealed to be enticing eminent scientists abroad to declare a Saudi affiliation—often in exchange for cash—in a bid to boost their rankings. Saudi Arabian universities now boast affiliations with just 76 of the world’s most cited researchers, compared with 109 in 2022, according to an analysis released Friday by the Barcelona, Spain–based research consultancy Siris Academic. The decrease could cause some Saudi institutions to fall in global rankings of universiti...
