The 272-Calorie Chinese Take-Out Favorite You Can Make At Home (VIDEO)
When many of us have a craving for Chinese food, we reach for the takeout or delivery menu and try to choose among our favorite dishes. It certainly makes for a cozy night in, but, according to registered dietician and author Sharon Palmer, there's something you may be overlooking when it comes to ordering Chinese food. "Many Asian restaurants can pack in the calories through the oils and all these salty sauces we add," Palmer tells #OWNSHOW in the above video. "In fact, some vegetarian meals that you might think might be healthy could have over 1,000 calories -- and that's not even including the rice, which can add anoth...

“Youth” mineral gives you anti-aging advantage
I always had an idea that deep down, living longer isn’t what people want. As long as they’re mobile and independent, and still have a sharp mind, most people accept that nature has given us a pretty good lifespan. And that’s what my patients often tell me. They want a better quality of life, not more years. That’s why I have always been about anti-aging. Extending life is a noble goal. But I want to help you live better now. And I’m very grateful to be living in a time when technology allows me to help you achieve that goal. Because the fact is, you have an advantage over everyone who’s come before you. And th...

Chickpea Soup: The Best Italian Comfort Soup EVER
Well dear readers, I'm thinking about doing a cookbook. But when I looked over my recipes, I realized I was missing a chickpea soup recipe, the kind you find in Italy. Then the other day, lo and behold, Holly, my yoga teacher said, "I'm coming over and we are going to make chickpea soup." I don't usually argue with Holly, and I didn't this time either. She based her soup on a Marcella Hazan recipe she found online, but of course, we modified and simplified it a bit. The results were simply astoundingly delicious. We made it on a cold winter's day, and it was the most perfect heartwarming, stomach-filling, soul-satisfying...

The science and magic of mulled wine
The holidays are almost over, but the cold weather provides an excellent excuse to keep the sensory memory of Christmas alive just a little longer with a warming glass of mulled wineAcross the boundless east we drove,Where those long swells of breaker sweepThe nutmeg rocks and isles of clove.TennysonMulled wine is one of my winter highlights; the welcoming warmth of a glass of spiced wine after a long walk in the cold is just wonderful. At its best, mulled wine brings the smells and thoughts of Christmas flooding back whatever the season. At its worst, however, it is sickly sweet, acidic and inconsistent from batch to batc...

Breast Cancer History, Please Don't Repeat
I don't have breast cancer. I've waited to hear those words for nearly six months, after a suspicious mammogram led to a host of other tests and procedures. Each round of results revealed more about what was causing the abnormalities. Ultimately I discovered that I have two conditions that generate atypical cells and put me at increased risk for breast cancer. Genetically I'm already predisposed, since my mom died from it at age 46. Because of her early death, I had my first mammogram at age 29. I've long paid close attention to the health of my breasts. For years I figured my small size meant I couldn't possibly face ...

Efficacy of 'natural' bed bug pesticides compared
The efficacy of nine essential oil-based products and two detergents that are labeled and marketed for bed bug control were evaluated by researchers. When the researchers sprayed the 11 non-synthetic pesticides directly on bed bug nymphs, they found that only two -- EcoRaider (1% geraniol, 1% cedar extract, and 2% sodium lauryl sulfate) and Bed Bug Patrol (0.003% clove oil, 1% peppermint oil, and 1.3% sodium lauryl sulfate) -- killed more than 90 percent of them. Clove oil tested for weed control in organic Vidalia sweet onion
(American Society for Horticultural Science) A study evaluated combinations of sprayer output volumes and herbicide adjuvants used with clove oil for cool-season weed control in organic Vidalia sweet onion. Weed control was not consistently improved by applying clove oil with sprayers calibrated at either 50 gallons/acre or 25 gallons/ acre, and infrequent improvements in weed control did not affect onion yield. The analyses showed that clove oil does not provide suitable levels of weed control to justify the expense. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Are e-cigarettes a 'gateway to nicotine addiction'?
Conclusion This study found US adolescents who use e-cigarettes are more likely to smoke conventional cigarettes. They also have lower odds of abstaining from conventional cigarettes than those who don't try e-cigarettes. On the flip side, e-cigarette users were more likely to report planning to quit conventional smoking. The research sample was large, so is likely to provide a relatively accurate picture of the smoking behaviour of US adolescents. These results suggest that e-cigarettes may not discourage conventional cigarette smoking in US adolescents, and may encourage it. However, because of the cross-sectional natur...
