In vitro and in vivo Activity of Phibilin Against Candida albicans
The increase in the occurrence of antifungal-resistant Candida albicans infections necessitates more research to explore alternative effective and safe agents against this fungus. In this work, Phibilin, a new antimicrobial peptide obtained from Philomycus bilineatus and used in traditional Chinese medicine, effectively inhibits the growth and activities of C. albicans, including the clinical resistant strains. Phibilin is a fungicidal antimicrobial peptide that exhibited its antimicrobial effect against C. albicans mainly by disrupting the membrane and interacting with the DNA of the fungi. In particular, Phibilin induces...

Application of microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry in bioanalytical chemistry of bioactive rhenium compounds
Talanta. 2022 Mar 26;244:123413. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2022.123413. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFive newly synthetized fac-Re(I) tricarbonyl compounds were explored as prospective antitrypanosomal agents. The biological activity of the whole series was evaluated preliminarily against the epimastigote form of Trypanosoma cruzi. All compounds showed activity against epimastigotes with IC50 values in the low micromolar range. The most active compound [fac-Re(I)(CO)3(tmp)(CTZ)](PF6), with CTZ = clotrimazole and tmp = 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenantroline, showed good selectivity towards the parasites and thus was selected ...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 2061: Microwave-Assisted Synthesis, Biological Activity Evaluation, Molecular Docking, and ADMET Studies of Some Novel Pyrrolo [2,3-b] Pyrrole Derivatives
Ali El-Remaily Novel pyrrolo [2,3-b] pyrrole derivatives were synthesized and their hypolipidemic activity was assessed in hyperlipidemic rats. The chemical structures of the new derivatives were confirmed through spectral analysis. Compounds 5 and 6 were revealed to be the most effective hypolipidemic agents, with considerable hypocholesterolemic and hypotriglyceridemic effects. They appear to be promising candidates for creating new powerful derivatives with anti-atherosclerotic and hypolipidemic properties. As for antimicrobial activity, some of the tested compounds showed moderate activity against Pseudomonas aeru...

Correlation analysis of vaginal microbiome changes and bacterial vaginosis plus vulvovaginal candidiasis mixed vaginitis prognosis
Mixed vaginitis is the result of the simultaneous presence of different pathogenic processes mediated by at least two types of vaginal pathogens. Among the various types of mixed vaginitis presentations, bacterial vaginosis (BV) plus vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) presents to be the most prevalent form. Mixed vaginitis affects the health of women of all ages worldwide. However, few studies have focused on clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, diagnostic criteria, or therapy of mixed vaginitis. We recruited 48 symptomatic patients with clinical diagnoses of VVC complicated with BV, they were treated with oral metronidazole...

Antagonism of the transient receptor potential melastatin ‑2 channel leads to targeted antitumor effects in primary human malignant melanoma cells
Int J Oncol. 2022 Apr;60(4):43. doi: 10.3892/ijo.2022.5333. Epub 2022 Mar 2.ABSTRACTMelanoma continues to be the most aggressive and devastating form of skin cancer for which the development of novel therapies is required. The present study aimed to determine the effects of antagonism of the transient receptor potential melastatin‑2 (TRPM2) ion channel in primary human malignant melanoma cells. TRPM2 antagonism via use of the antifungal agent, clotrimazole, led to decreases in cell proliferation, as well as dose‑dependent increases in cell death in all melanoma cell lines investigated. The targeting of TRPM2 channels w...
