Treatment of otomycosis with clotrimazole: results accordingly with the fungus isolated
CONCLUSIONS: Otomycosis was more frequently caused by Candida, and this type of otomycosis is treated faster with clotrimazole 10 mg/dL plus ear cleaning, when compared with otomycosis by Aspergillus.SIGNIFICANCE: If otomycosis causative agent is identified or suspected, a prediction of the time needed till the resolution of otomycosis can be made, when clotrimazole ear drops are used.PMID:36128634 | DOI:10.1080/00016489.2022.2117845 (Source: Acta Oto-Laryngologica)

Self-Healable, Injectable Hydrogel with Enhanced Clotrimazole Solubilization as a Potential Therapeutic Platform for Gynecology
This study demonstrates that the HbPGL core hydrophobized with phenyl units at 30 mol % degrees via urethane linkages is optimal in respect of the drug encapsulation efficiency and rheological properties including both self-healable and injectable behavior. This work is important because of a proper selection of a building component for the construction of a therapeutic hydrogel platform dedicated to the intravaginal delivery of hydrophobic drugs.PMID:36073031 | DOI:10.1021/acs.biomac.2c00691 (Source: Biomacromolecules)

Antibiotics and antimycotics in waste water treatment plants: Concentrations, removal efficiency, spatial and temporal variations, prediction, and ecological risk assessment
Environ Res. 2022 Aug 20:114135. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2022.114135. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFor investigating the spatial, temporal variations and assessing ecological risk of 10 antibiotics and 6 antimycotics, influent sewage water and treated effluent were collected during three different seasons in 19 waste water treatment plants of Tianjin. High performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was used to analyze 16 substances. The concentration range of influent samples was not detected (nd) -547.94 ng/L and the concentration range of effluent samples was nd-52.97 ng/L. By calculating the removal effic...

An Overview of the Diagnosis and Management of Seborrheic Dermatitis
Clin Cosmet Investig Dermatol. 2022 Aug 6;15:1537-1548. doi: 10.2147/CCID.S284671. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTSeborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disorder that mostly affects young adults in areas rich in sebaceous glands (scalp, face, and trunk). In adolescents and adults, SD clinical presentation may range from mild patches to diffuse scalp scaling. In infants, it mainly occurs on the scalp as yellowish, scaly patches ("cradle cap"). In adults, several environmental triggers are likely to promote SD development, along with fungal colonization by Malassezia spp., sebaceous gland activity, as wel...

Fungal otitis externa and tympanic membrane perforation
ConclusionTo conclude, we state that treatment with clotrimazole solution in patched group is safe in managing otomycosis with tympanic membrane perforation. Otomycosis is a fungus causing surface infection of the external auditory canal that otolaryngologists routinely diagnose by medical examination. In acute otomycosis, overgrowth of the fungus in the external auditory canal is due to increased humidity. (Source: Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery)

Promising essential oils/plant extracts in the prevention and treatment of dandruff pathogenesis
CONCLUSION: Overall, this review explains the occurrence of dandruff, its etiology, and the potential applicability of promising plant essential oils/extracts, and their novel treatment strategies. Further studies based on pre-clinical and clinical research are essential before making any conclusion about its efficacy in humans.PMID:35642120 | DOI:10.2174/1568026622666220531120226 (Source: Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry)

Antibiotic prophylaxis for corneal abrasion
CONCLUSIONS: Given the low to very low certainty of the available evidence, any beneficial effects of antibiotic prophylaxis in preventing ocular infection or accelerating epithelial healing following a corneal abrasion remain unclear. Moreover, the current evidence is insufficient to support any antibiotic regimen being superior to another. There is a need for a well-designed RCT assessing the efficacy and safety of ocular antibiotics in the treatment of corneal abrasion with a particular focus on high-risk populations and formulation of interventions.PMID:35622535 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD014617.pub2 (Source: Cochrane Da...

Investigating the effect of graphene oxide in chitosan/alginate-based foams on the release and antifungal activity of clotrimazole in vitro
This study aimed at investigating the effect of graphene oxide (GO) and the composition of excipients in chitosan/alginate-based buccal foams on the clotrimazole release and antifungal activities. The investigation has been focused on the interactions of the drug with excipients in the foams, and the changes of ionization degree upon exposure to various media are discussed. The solid foams were prepared by mixing the excipients and clotrimazole via probe sonication, followed by a freeze-drying method. The pH values of the formulations were measured during the foam preparation process to estimate the ionization degree of cl...
