Preop meds for pain control
Can some of you anesthesiologists please remind me what preop meds are now used for reducing postop pain? In my day I seem to remember lyrica, clonidine, and/or celebrex being meds that would be taken PO several hours before surgery and that made post op pain more tolerable Please elighten me on what pre op PO meds are used for this (at least at academic centers) (Source: Student Doctor Network)

In an effort to reduce polypharmacy and increase efficacy I am considering starting/changing-to alpha-2 agonists I am discussing with my psychiatry supervisors, but I hoped for some insight/wisdom... I've seen a number of patients w/ prescriptions, typically hydralazine or clonidine, to be taken only as needed for at home SBPs>180 (in addition to their scheduled antihypertensives). Pt rushed to OR for worsening shock on multiple pressors. I remove the clonidine patch on his shoulder. He did well after three liters of blood removed from his abdomen. "It was a home medication." (Source: Student Doctor Network)
