Facility capacity and provider knowledge for cholera surveillance and diarrhoea case management in cholera hotspots in the Democratic Republic of Congo - a mixed-methods study
CONCLUSIONS: Increasing awareness of cholera case definitions in this context could help improve cholera surveillance and control. Increased support and supervision, especially for private providers, could help ensure facilities are equipped to provide safe care. More nuanced aspects of case management should be emphasised in provider training.PMID:38441883 | PMC:PMC10916892 | DOI:10.1080/16549716.2024.2317774 (Source: Global Health Action)

< em > Vibrio cholerae < /em > virulence and its suppression through the quorum-sensing system
Crit Rev Microbiol. 2024 Mar 5:1-22. doi: 10.1080/1040841X.2024.2320823. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVibrio cholerae is a cholera-causing pathogen known to instigate severe contagious diarrhea that affects millions globally. Survival of vibrios depend on a combination of multicellular responses and adapt to changes that prevail in the environment. This process is achieved through a strong communication at the cellular level, the process has been recognized as quorum sensing (QS). The severity of infection is highly dependent on the QS of vibrios in the gut milieu. The quorum may exist in a low/high cell density (LCD/HCD)...

The world ’s stockpile of cholera vaccine is empty—but relief is on the way
The world has run out of cholera vaccines—just when the deadly disease is on a rampage not seen in many years. Fifteen countries are currently reporting active outbreaks, with more than 40,900 cases and 775 deaths reported in January alone. But all available doses of oral cholera vaccines in the global stockpile have been allocated until mid-March, Philippe Barboza, cholera team lead at the World Health Organization (WHO), said on 23 February. He said there is now “no buffer for unforeseen outbreaks or preventive campaigns.” The catastrophic shortage is a result not just of a surge in cases, but also of an over...

EMG Testing throughout behavioral recovery after rat sciatic nerve crush injury results in exuberant motoneuron dendritic hypertrophy
CONCLUSIONS: The ability of repeated EMG testing to so dramatically affect central plasticity following a peripheral nerve injury was unexpected. It was also unexpected that gonadal steroid hormones and/or ES, two neurotherapeutic approaches with demonstrated molecular/behavioral changes consistent with peripheral improvements in axonal repair and target reconnection, do not appear to impact central plasticity in a similar manner. The significance of peripheral EMG testing and resulting central plasticity reorganization remains to be determined.PMID:38363624 | DOI:10.3233/RNN-231379 (Source: Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience)
