Using wash cloths in jails shows promise for reducing costly infections
(Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America) New research shows providing detainees wash cloths treated with a skin cleanser could reduce the prevalence of S. aureus bacteria in US jails. Bacteria growing less susceptible to common antiseptic
Bacteria that cause life-threatening bloodstream infections in critically ill patients may be growing increasingly resistant to a common hospital antiseptic, according to a recent study. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) has been increasingly used in hospitals in light of recent evidence that daily antiseptic baths for patients in intensive care units (ICUs) may prevent infections and stop the spread of healthcare-associated infections. The impact of this expanded use on the effectiveness of the disinfectant is not yet known. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Text messages could help decrease rate of surgical infections
A small study conducted at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee shows that text message reminders can increase patients’ compliance with pre-surgical showering, thus reducing their risk of acquiring an infection during surgery. Pre-surgical antiseptic showers, using a chemical like chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), reduce the number of microbes on the skin, which guards the patient against […] (Source: mobihealthnews)

Researchers pinpoint superbug's resistance protein
Researchers have identified a resistance protein that allows bacteria to survive chlorhexidine, a disinfectant commonly used in wipes, cleansers and mouthwashes in hospitals.A study led jointly by the University of Leeds and Macquarie University in Australia showed how the superbug Acinetobacter baumannii - prevalent among soldiers treated in medical facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan - can pump the disinfectant out of its system. The findings are critical for the design of new chemicals to combat the germ.
