Sea creatures began to glow half a billion years ago
When a shaggy bamboo coral ( Isidella tentaculum ) gets jostled by the arm of a remotely operated submersible, its limbs begin to sparkle with bluish light. The gleam penetrates the blackness of the deep sea, where many octocorals—an ancient, diverse group of marine invertebrates that includes quill-shaped sea pens, bamboo corals, and other soft corals and waving sea fans—form lush underwater gardens. Some three-quarters of all undersea animals can generate their own light , but the origin of this ability has been shrouded in mystery. Now, research reported today in the Proceedings...

Determination of optimum levels of binding antibody units (BAU) of new quantitative chemiluminescent immuno-assay (CLIA) in COVID-19 vaccinated volunteer blood donors
This study was undertaken to determine optimum levels of binding antibody units (BAU/ml) in new quantitative chemiluminescent assay (CLIA) that corresponded to neutralizing potential (30% inhibition) of sVNT assay. Methods: Ninety-one blood samples were analyzed by CLIA and sVNT assays. Test samples (n=75) were collected from blood donors post-2nd vaccination dose, while control samples (n=16) were archived pre-COVID donor samples. (Source: Transfusion and Apheresis Science)

Efficient separation of europium by solvent extraction using bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate
AbstractEfficient separation of europium (Eu) from aqueous solution is pivotal for the sustainable development of nuclear industry and rare earth industry. In this work, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (P204) was employed to separate Eu(III) by solvent extraction method using kerosene as diluent. The extraction equilibrium could reach within 30-min contact time. The extraction ratio enhanced as the increased O:A phase ratio, extractant concentration, and temperature. However, the HCl introduction caused its clear descent. Combined with the slope method and FT-IR analysis, extraction mechanism could be unveiled, which is the co...
