Role of low-proportion, hydrophobic dissolved organic matter components in inhibiting methylmercury uptake by phytoplankton
In this study, we employed a widely-used resin fractionation approach to separate and classify DOM derived from algae (AOM) and natural rivers (NOM) into distinct components: strongly hydrophobic, weakly hydrophobic, and hydrophilic fractions. We conduct a comparative analysis of different DOM components using a combination of spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques, aiming to identify their impact on MeHg uptake by Microcystis elabens, a prevalent alga in freshwater environments. We found that the hydrophobic components had exhibited more pronounced spectral characteristics associated with the protein structures whi...

Low-intensity alternating ventilation achieves effective humification during food waste composting by enhancing the intensity of microbial interaction and carbon metabolism
This study set three experimental groups with varying ventilation intensities based on self-made alternating ventilation composting reactor (AL2: 0.2 L·kg-1 DM·min-1; AL4: 0.4 L·kg-1 DM·min-1; AL6: 0.6 L·kg-1 DM·min-1) to explore the optimal alternating ventilation rate. The results showed that the cumulative ammonia emission of AL2 group reduced by 25.13% and 12.59% compared to the AL4 and AL6 groups. The humification degree of the product was 1.18 times and 1.25 times higher than the other two groups. AL2 increased the relative abundance of the core species Saccharomonospora, thereby strengthening microbial interac...

Rare-earth elements in the topsoils of a russian industrial city: sources and human health risk assessment
This study investigates the potential sources and human health risks of REEs contained in the topsoils of the industrial Russian city of Chelyabinsk. The study also takes into account natural sources of REE as the city is located on the border of granites (Urals) and sedimentary rocks (Western Siberia). We analyzed the concentration and distribution of REEs in the soils of four types of locations: residential courtyards, city parks, roadsides, and industrial locations. The total REE concentrations ranged from 44 to 255 mg/kg, with average concentrations of 140, 124, 113 and 89 mg/kg in the courtyards, roadsides, industrial...

Application of ultrasonic-enhanced active seed crystals in the removal of sodium oxalate from alumina refinery waste liquor
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Apr 20;106:106881. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106881. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhen organic matter, especially sodium oxalate (Na2C2O4), accumulates to a certain extent, it will seriously affect the alumina production process in the refinery and therefore urgently needs to be removed. This work attempts to illuminate the benefits of ultrasonic intensification of the crystallization process of Na2C2O4, taking the alumina refinery waste liquor, i.e., flat plate washing liquor, as a case study. The effects of different operating parameters (seed crystal addition amount, caustic soda concentratio...
