< em > Gardnerella vaginalis < /em > : Is it an Underestimated Cause of Urinary Symptoms in Males?
CONCLUSION: With the introduction of multiplex PCR tests, including those for G. vaginalis, we can expect a higher detection rate of these species of bacteria in male genitourinary samples, which could be the cause of unexplained urinary/urethral symptoms.PMID:38633399 | PMC:PMC10986695 | DOI:10.36519/idcm.2022.172 (Source: Herpes)

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCurrently, ulcerative sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis, herpes simplex virus (HSV), lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), chancroid, donovanosis and, more recently, monkeypox (MPOX), represent a growing challenge for health care professionals. The incidence of syphilis and LGV has increased in recent years in Spain. Additionally, HSV, syphilis and chancroid can also increase the risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. The population groups most vulnerable to these infections are young people,...

Prevalence and risk factors associated with < i > Haemophilus ducreyi < /i > cutaneous ulcers in Cameroon
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence ofHD as cause of cutaneous ulcers, investigate its presence in asymptomatic individuals and identify associated risk factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in yaws endemic districts of Cameroon. Participants included people presenting yaws-like ulcers and asymptomatic individuals. Swab samples were collected from each participant and tested forHD andTreponema pallidum (TP) using an established qPCR method. Additionally, demographic, habitat, proximity, and hygiene characteristics were collected using a structured questionnaire. A total of 443 individuals p...

Sexually Transmitted Infections from the Twentieth to the Twenty-first Century
At the start of the 20 th century, we had little understanding of the size of the problem presented by what was then termed Venereal Diseases. Only gonorrhea, syphilis, and chancroid were recognized as being venereal in origin . Population surveys were available, but their accuracy is open to interpretation. For example, a serologic survey carried out in 1914 suggested that up to 12% of the adult men and 7% of the adult women of London suffered from syphilis. The rate of gonorrhea was thought to be even greater. (Source: Clinics in Dermatology)

Dramatic Shift in the Etiology of Genital Ulcer Disease Among Patients Visiting a Sexually Transmitted Infections Clinic in Lilongwe, Malawi
CONCLUSIONS: We observed a dramatic increase in syphilis ulcer proportion in a population whose GUDs were previously HSV predominant. Observed differences in etiology and resolution by HIV status could play an important role in the ongoing transmission and treatment evaluation of GUD.PMID:37824787 | PMC:PMC10575672 | DOI:10.1097/OLQ.0000000000001853 (Source: Herpes)

Endemic infectious cutaneous ulcers syndrome in the Oti Region of Ghana: Study of cutaneous leishmaniasis, yaws and < i > Haemophilus ducreyi < /i > cutaneous ulcers
Conclusions/SignificanceThis study detected single and mixed occurrence of the causative organisms of CL, yaws, andH.ducreyi cutaneous ulcers in CL endemic communities of the Oti Region in Ghana. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating multiple skin diseases on a common research platform and calls for the development of a comprehensive guideline for diagnosing and treating tropical ulcers in the study areas. Orthogonal Glycosylation with Phosphate Acceptors for Expeditious Synthesis of Bacterial Inner Core Oligosaccharides
We report a practical one-pot glycosylation strategy for synthesis of bacterial inner core oligosaccharides that composed of unavailable L-glycero-D--manno and D-glycero-D-manno-heptopyranose components. The glycosylation method features a new orthogonal glycosylation procedure; whereby a phosphate acceptor is coupled with a thioglycosyl donor producing a disaccharide phosphate, which can be engaged in another orthogonal glycosylation procedure to couple with a thioglycosyl acceptor. The phosphate acceptors used in above one-pot procedure are directly prepared from thioglycosyl acceptors via the in-situ phosphorylation. Su...
