Is Hoof Maker cream for horses really good for your nails? Episode 111
This study is often quoted as saying it worked better than or as well as 4% hydroquinone but 4 weeks is not long enough to judge that and again, and this was not about hexylresorcinol itself .” Finally, the website Truth in Aging says… ”HR’s ability to target pathways in the skin that lead to hyperpigmentation has propelled it into the skin lightening ingredient category. There is also thought that Hexylresorcinol has more benefits as well, including an ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increase protection against UVB and UVA rays, and improve the skin’s barrier against pollution an...

Study on Potential Toxicity of E-Cigarette Flavorings Produces Unwarranted Scare
A study published in the journal Tobacco Control this past April has produced an unwarranted scare about the potential toxicity of the flavorings in electronic cigarettes.(See: Tierney PA, et al. Flavour chemicals in electronic cigarette fluids. Tobacco Control. Published online ahead of print on April 15, 2015. DOI: 0.1136/tobaccocontrol-2014-052175.)The study used gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to analyze the chemical constituents in e-liquids of various flavors. It appears that 30 different e-liquid flavors were tested. Multiple flavors of two brands of disposable e-cigarettes (Blu and NJOY) were tested along with...

This week Randy and I explain how to test your makeup primer to see if it’s worth the money. Improbable products You know this game – I look for beauty products that are just too ridiculous to be true, then I make up one that’s even more ridiculous and challenge Perry to guess which one is fake. Can you spot the phony? Unity Farm Journal - 4th week of June 2014
Last weekend, we had two days of clear, warm weather, perfect for harvesting vegetables, inoculating mushrooms, and caring for bees.We received 40 pounds of mushroom spawn from our supplier, Field and Forest, and we created two new mushroom areas - 4 raised beds of compost with Agaricus (almond mushroom) and 12 new stacks of logs with Oysters.    The Golden Oysters are beginning to fruit in the warm humidity of summer afternoons.Eating on the farm can be as simple as taking a basket to the hoop house and gathering a potpourri of delectable vegetables.    Sunday’s brunch was a bowl of fresh strawberrie...

Sleep Better with Food and Fitness
Just as sleep is important to our body, what we do with our body in terms of food and exercise plays a major role in the way we sleep (or don’t sleep).  Good nutrition and exercise can help you sleep, but poor sleep leads to poor eating and exercise decisions immediately. A lack of shut-eye is linked with ditching your workout. It’s one thing to skip the workout to get more sleep once in awhile, but if you ditch your workout and cheat yourself of sleep, then you aren’t breaking the cycle. Contrary to what we have all been told, eating prior to bed is not such a bad thing after all.  In fact, a light snack contai...

Softsoap Lavender and Chamomile: Look at the label
Softsoap’s Lavender and Chamomile liquid soap is one of the top selling products on Amazon.com. Looking at the label you’ll see that it contains neither lavender nor chamomile. Is this misleading or even illegal? The answer depends on what they claim about the product. Here’s what they say: “Soothe your spirit while cleansing hands. The relaxing scent of lavender, fresh from the field, entwines with tender chamomile flowers. Brings a moment of calm to stressful days and helps leave skin feeling soft.” Read the claims closely and you’ll see that they only claim that the product provides t...

Do natural ingredients do anything for hair?
Charlotte says…I was researching the purpose of the various components and found that comfrey helps prevent tangles, chamomile helps with shine, and witch hazel balances hydration and reduces frizz. Also, the first ingredient has to be the largest by volume, right? That’s ginseng (right after water) which is supposed to help with shine and strength. Don’t these ingredients play a role in the effect on hair as well? Let me know if there’s something I’m not considering. The Beauty Brains respond: I’ll let you in on a little secret of the cosmetic industry. Most of the “natural̶...

Vincent Longo Lip & Cheek Gel – Look at the label
Vincent Longo Lip & Cheek Gel is a beauty best seller on Amazon. Let’s look at the label.  Claims Extremely long wearing. Layers directly over moisturized lips and cheeks to deliver a beautiful wash of sheer color. This product should have no problem delivering “long wearing” color due to its relatively unique water free formula. It’s based on a host of water-proof ingredients that won’t easily smear or wear off including castor seed oil, some long chain hydrocarbons (Octyldodecanol, Hydrogenated Polydecene) and several waxes. The colorants are a mix of naturally derived pigments (the ...

Building Unity Farm - Managing the Woodland, Manure, and Bees in Winter
I've written about our winter preparations and keeping the animals healthy in the 6 months of sub-freezing weather we have in New England.   It's been a particularly cold winter in Massachusetts.  It's currently 2 degrees F and we're expecting another foot of snow.As the snow gets deeper, the icicles get longer, and all unheated water becomes a solid chunk of ice, how do we manage our weekly work routine on the farm? Our 15 acres of woodland require constant maintenance - bucking fallen trees, removing broken branches, repairing trails/bridges, splitting wood, and making chip piles. The new Terex PT30 compact track...

Marcelene D.
Marcelene had some incredibly kind words about Grain Brain, and I wanted to share her story with you. Hers is an incredibly powerful reminder of just how significant of an impact chaning your diet can have. – Dr. Perlmutter I was not born with a seizure disorder.  I have always been extremely healthy: exercise daily, use supplements, meditate, drink plenty of water, get regular sleep of eight hours, and my weight has always been in the lean mass area. However, in my late 40s I began having petit mal seizures. Then, at age 49, I had a grand mal seizure. This one opened up a new world of this disorder. When my neur...
