Nonemergency ED Use Higher Among Infants of Mothers With Perinatal Depression, Study Finds
Compared with infants of mothers with no perinatal depression symptoms, those born to mothers with mild or moderate/severe symptoms were significantly more likely to have emergency department (ED) visits for nonemergency reasons, according to astudy published inHealth Affairs.“Perinatal mental health conditions affect 20% of birthing people and are associated with a range of adverse child outcomes, including increased ED use,” wrote Slawa Rokicki, Ph.D., M.S., of Rutgers University. “This may be a result of increased illness or injury due to biological effects of d epression on infant health or inadequate infant care...

Hospital-acquired pneumonia due to Burkholderia cepacia in a thalassemia pregnancy with postoperative eclampsia: A case report
Respir Med Case Rep. 2024 Apr 4;49:102021. doi: 10.1016/j.rmcr.2024.102021. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThere are limited case reports on individuals infected with Burkholderia cepacia who do not have typical risk factors, particularly pregnant women with beta-thalassemia. A 34-year-old pregnant female with beta-thalassemia trait and hypertension was admitted to the hospital. The patient was diagnosed with eclampsia and underwent a cesarean section. After two days following the surgery, the patient experienced hospitality-acquired pneumonia. B.cepacia was isolated from blood cultures, and antibiotic susceptibility testing ind...

Endocan: A biomarker for endothelial dysfunction and inflammation, linking maternal obesity and pediatric obesity in a cohort of preterm neonates
The prevalence of obesity in reproductive aged women in the United States is approaching 40  %, and is thus the most common risk factor for pregnancy complications [1,2]. It has been well established that maternal obesity in pregnancy is associated with increased risks for the mother and the neonate. Maternal risks include gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, sleep apnea, cesarean section , venous thromboembolism, wound dehiscence, and epidural anesthesia failure [2,3]. Fetal and neonatal risks include congenital anomalies, difficulty in ultrasonographic diagnosis of anomalies, increased likelihood of cell free fetal DNA ...

Face presentation at term: incidence, risk factors and influence on maternal and neonatal outcomes
ConclusionsFace presentation was rare. Early diagnosis is difficult, and thus easily neglected. High parity and amniotic fluid index  >  18 cm are risk factors for face presentation. An early diagnosis and proper management of face presentation could lead to good maternal and neonatal outcomes. (Source: Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics)

Multidisciplinary management of a pregnant woman with hepatic rupture complicated with HELLP syndrome
Am J Transl Res. 2024 Mar 15;16(3):933-939. doi: 10.62347/RASL4490. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA 32-year-old woman with preeclampsia who presented with persistent severe hypertension and epigastric pain underwent an emergency cesarean section for fetal distress and was diagnosed with hepatic rupture and HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and a low platelet) syndrome. After the operation, the patient was transferred to the intensive care unit for supportive treatment and management of complications. Diagnosis and treatment decisions were made through multidisciplinary management. The patient received plasma exchange an...

Effects of Preoperative Oral Carbohydrate on Perioperative Maternal Outcomes Undergoing Cesarean Section: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: Preoperative oral CHO during cesarean section alleviates thirst and hunger, shortens the time of postoperative flatus, and reduces HOMA-IR. However, the available evidence is insufficient to reach a clear consensus on the benefits or harms of preoperative oral CHO during cesarean section. Therefore, it is premature to make a definitive recommendation for or against its routine use.PMID:38586152 | PMC:PMC10999288 | DOI:10.1155/2024/4660422 (Source: Anesthesiology Research and Practice)
