Serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of pediatric Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from inpatients and outpatients at Beijing Children's Hospital
CONCLUSIONS: Pneumococcal vaccine-related serotypes are prevalent among both inpatients and outpatients, especially among inpatients, who exhibit more severe antibiotic resistance. Therefore, universal immunization with PCV13 would decrease the hospitalization rate due to S. pneumoniae and the antibiotic resistance rate of S. pneumoniae.PMID:38471654 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjid.2024.103734 (Source: Braz J Infect Dis)

Emergence and clonal expansion of Aeromonas hydrophila ST1172 that simultaneously produces MOX-13 and OXA-724
ConclusionsOur study validated the transmission of a novel carbapenem-resistantA. hydrophila sequence type (ST1172) in patients that underwent spine surgery. Control measures should be developed to prevent dissemination ofA. hydrophila in the hospital setting. (Source: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control)

Sensitizing methicillin-resistant < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > (MRSA) to cefuroxime: the synergic effect of bicarbonate and the wall teichoic acid inhibitor ticlopidine
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2024 Feb 13:e0162723. doi: 10.1128/aac.01627-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains are a major challenge for clinicians due, in part, to their resistance to most β-lactams, the first-line treatment for methicillin-susceptible S. aureus. A phenotype termed "NaHCO3-responsiveness" has been identified, wherein many clinical MRSA isolates are rendered susceptible to standard-of-care β-lactams in the presence of physiologically relevant concentrations of NaHCO3, in vitro and ex vivo; moreover, such "NaHCO3-responsive" isolates can be effective...

An assessment of the index of rational drug prescribing for severe acute respiratory infections among hospitalised children in Northern Nigeria: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Drug prescribing for hospitalized children with SARI was suboptimal, especially with regard to polypharmacy, antibiotics, and injection use. Interventions to promote rational use of medicines including antimicrobial stewardship interventions are recommended.PMID:38334431 | DOI:10.1080/14787210.2024.2307913 (Source: Expert Review of Anti-Infective Therapy)

The role of type VI secretion system genes in antibiotic resistance and virulence in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates
DiscussionThe above results suggest that T6SS plays an important role, participating in the antibiotic resistance of A. baumannii, especially in terms of intrinsic resistance. Meanwhile, tssM and tssD contribute to bacterial virulence to a greater degree, with tssM being associated with greater importance. (Source: Frontiers in cellular and infection microbiology)

Exploration adhesion properties of < i > Liquorilactobacillus < /i > and < i > Lentilactobacillus < /i > isolated from two different sources of tepache kefir grains
by Juli án Fernando Oviedo-León, Maribel Cornejo-Mazón, Rosario Ortiz-Hernández, Nayeli Torres-Ramírez, Humberto Hernández-Sánchez, Diana C. Castro-Rodríguez Due to the distinctive characteristics of probiotics, it is essential to pinpoint strains originating from diverse sources that prove efficacious in addressing a range of pathologies linked to dysfunction of the intestinal barrier. Nine strains of lactic acid bacteria were isolated from two differ ent sources of tepache kefir grains (KAS2, KAS3, KAS4, KAS7, KAL4, KBS2, KBS3, KBL1 and KBL3), and were categorized to the genusLacticaseibacillus,Liquorilactobacil...

Antibiotic Resistance Profile of < em > E. coli < /em > Isolates from Lettuce, Poultry Manure, Irrigation Water, and Soil in Kumasi, Ghana
Int J Microbiol. 2024 Jan 27;2024:6681311. doi: 10.1155/2024/6681311. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTInputs such as irrigation water and poultry manure used in lettuce cultivation have been found to be associated with antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The study assessed the antibiotic resistance profile of Escherichia coli isolated from lettuce, poultry manure, irrigation water, and soil in Kumasi. One hundred and fifty-six samples of lettuce, irrigation water, soil, and manure were collected from three farms over a seven-week cultivation period (seedlings to harvest stage). E. coli were enumerated using standard methods. 98% of t...
