Author ’s Reply to Regarding the risk of atrial arrhythmias in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy patients undergoing ventricular tachycardia ablation
In response to Drs. Cheng and Zhang to our paper1, we note that despite ARVC being a relatively uncommon cardiomyopathy, we uniquely report on a large clinical experience with very long-term follow-up after VT ablation and confirm a high incidence of atrial flutter (AFL) and the effectiveness and low risk of catheter ablation of AFL. We also readily acknowledge that a risk score for predicting a clinical outcome is strengthened by a large data set, and we noted as a limitation that our risk score is based on a relatively small number of patients at a single center and should be considered hypothesis-generating and that add...

Artificial intelligence-enhanced risk stratification of cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction using electrocardiographic images
CONCLUSION: AI applied to baseline ECG images can stratify the risk of CTRCD associated with anthracycline or trastuzumab exposure.CONDENSED ABSTRACT: There is an unmet need for scalable and affordable biomarkers to stratify the risk of cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD). In this hospital system-based, decade-long cohort of patients without cardiomyopathy receiving anthracyclines or trastuzumab, a validated artificial intelligence algorithm applied to baseline electrocardiographic (AI-ECG) images identified individuals with a 2-fold and 4.8-fold risk of developing any cardiomyopathy or left ventricular...

Interatrial shunt therapy in advanced heart failure: Outcomes from the open ‐label cohort of the RELIEVE‐HF trial
ConclusionInteratrial shunting with the Ventura device was safe and resulted in favourable clinical effects in patients with HF, regardless of LVEF. Improvements of left and right ventricular structure and function were consistent with reverse myocardial remodelling. These results would support the potential of this shunt device as a treatment for HF. (Source: European Journal of Heart Failure)

Neuronal nitric oxide synthase required for erythropoietin modulation of heart function in mice
Discussion: Endogenous EPO has a protective effect on heart function. With EPO administration, in contrast to the protective effect to the cardiac injury of acute EPO treatment, extended EPO treatment to increase hematocrit in WT mice adversely affected the heart function with a corresponding increase in expression of heart failure-associated genes. This EPO activity was independent of EPO-stimulated erythropoiesis and required EPOR in non-erythroid tissue and nNOS activity, while nNOS−/− mice were protected from the EPO-associated adverse effect on heart function. These data provide evidence that nNOS contributes to t...

2024 Australia –New Zealand Expert Consensus Statement on Cardiac Amyloidosis
Over the past 5 years, early diagnosis of and new treatments for cardiac amyloidosis (CA) have emerged that hold promise for early intervention. These include non-invasive diagnostic tests and disease modifying therapies. Recently, CA has been one of the first types of cardiomyopathy to be treated with gene editing techniques. Although these therapies are not yet widely available to patients in Australia and New Zealand, this may change in the near future. Given the rapid pace with which this field is evolving, it is important to view these advances within the Australian and New Zealand context. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Irisin attenuates type 1 diabetic cardiomyopathy by anti-ferroptosis via SIRT1-mediated deacetylation of p53
Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a serious complication in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), which still lacks adequate therapy. Irisin, a cleavage peptide off fibronectin type III domain-containi... (Source: Cardiovascular Diabetology)

Combination of electrophysiological mapping, radiofrequency catheter ablation, and atrial appendectomy in a 5-year-old girl with tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy: a case report
Atrial tachycardia (AT) originating from the left atrial appendage (LAA) is uncommon and the most difficult arrhythmia to eliminate. Therefore, we present the case of a 5-year-old girl with tachycardia-induced... (Source: Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery)

Semaglutide in Patients with HFpEF and Obesity
Clinical question: Does treatment with semaglutide lead to a reduction in symptoms and physical limitations and improve exercise function in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and obesity? Does it affect hospitalizations? Background: Patients with HFpEF and obesity have more adverse clinical features and hemodynamics, more symptoms, worse functional capacity, and more severely impaired quality of life. There is growing evidence that obesity and excess adiposity may play a role in the development and progression of HFpEF. Study design: Randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial Se...

Body mass index and cardiorenal outcomes in the EMPEROR ‐Preserved trial: Principal findings and meta‐analysis with the DELIVER trial
ConclusionsEmpagliflozin treatment resulted in broadly consistent cardiac effects across the range of BMI in patients with HFpEF. SGLT2i treatment yields benefit in patients with HFpEF regardless of baseline BMI. (Source: European Journal of Heart Failure)

Role of Treg cell subsets in cardiovascular disease pathogenesis and potential therapeutic targets
Front Immunol. 2024 Mar 15;15:1331609. doi: 10.3389/fimmu.2024.1331609. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTIn the genesis and progression of cardiovascular diseases involving both innate and adaptive immune responses, inflammation plays a pivotal and dual role. Studies in experimental animals indicate that certain immune responses are protective, while others exacerbate the disease. T-helper (Th) 1 cell immune responses are recognized as key drivers of inflammatory progression in cardiovascular diseases. Consequently, the CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) are gaining increasing attention for their roles in inflammation and ...

From Blunt Cardiac Injury to Heart Transplant Following Motorcycle Collision
We present a case of a healthy 24-year-old man without significant past medical history who was in a motorcycle accident, resulting in sternal fracture and BCI. He was ultimately found to have thrombotic occlusion and dissection of his left anterior descending artery (LAD), requiring mechanical thrombectomy and drug-eluting stent, as well as subsequent hospitalizations and operations due to various complications. It was suspected that he went into ventricular fibrillation and had a second motorcycle collision, resulting in cardiogenic shock. Ultimately, his progression of ischemic cardiomyopathy and mitral regurgitation le...
