Research Analysis of Using tPA to Treat Cardiac Arrest
James and his friend Brandon, a 41-year-old male with an initially unknown past medical history, are hanging out when Brandon goes into cardiac arrest just outside of his house. James calls 9-1-1 and begins CPR until EMS arrives. James tells the arriving crew his friend could be hypoglycemic, so the lead paramedic administers an ampule of D50. A supraglottic airway is placed and compressions are continued, with end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) through the supraglottic device noted to be in the 30s. An Inside Look at a Hospital Stay From Chest Pain
As a boy, soon after my mom would drop me off at Scranton (Pa.) fire headquarters to ride a shift on the ambulance with my dad, the bell would hit and the fire crews would be sent to a big wreck or two-alarm fire. So, at the age of 13, I was nicknamed "Black Cloud" by the firefighters because s--- happened whenever I showed up. I've had people go into anaphylactic shock on a train as I rode it to work, and once a homeless gentleman wandering on the tracks had both of his legs amputated by a train entering San Diego's main station as I stood there watching. I call it coincidental, but my friends and the JEMS staff...

[Research Article] Genetic identification of familial hypercholesterolemia within a single U.S. health care system
Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) remains underdiagnosed despite widespread cholesterol screening. Exome sequencing and electronic health record (EHR) data of 50,726 individuals were used to assess the prevalence and clinical impact of FH-associated genomic variants in the Geisinger Health System. The estimated FH prevalence was 1:256 in unselected participants and 1:118 in participants ascertained via the cardiac catheterization laboratory. FH variant carriers had significantly increased risk of coronary artery disease. Only 24% of carriers met EHR-based presequencing criteria for probable or definite FH diagnosis. Activ...

How $80 Can Save A Life
Case study: A 48 year-old man, athletic and highly successful in his career, enjoys a day of surfing. While walking back to his car, he collapses and cannot be revived. A heart attack is to blame for his sudden death. Rare? Unfortunately, this is neither rare nor hypothetical as the world lost a good man recently and my heart goes out to his young family. How can this happen? Although I did not know this man, I imagine he saw doctors and had checkups. Perhaps he even had a stress test along the way. There is a disconnect in the identification of early heart disease that is not true of some other important ailments. For ex...
