Carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) predicts heavy drinking in adolescents with alcohol dependence - Deas D, Johnson N, Thomas S.
A biomarker that could indicate problematic drinking in adolescents and/or reflect changes in heavy drinking would be a valuable addition to prevention, treatment, and research efforts. Carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) is a valid biomarker of heavy... (Source: SafetyLit)

Medical Study Tests Boston Marathon Runners ’ Waste For Performance-Boosting Bacteria
(CNN) — Great athletes not only have heart, they have guts — special guts. Boston Marathon runners and Olympic athletes have higher than usual amounts of Veillonella bacteria in their digestive tract following races, a new study finds. When mice consumed the Veillonella, their treadmill runs were better than those of mice not given the same bacterial diet, according to new research published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine. Our digestive system, a group of organs that includes the stomach and colon, harbors nearly 100 trillion bacteria. Collectively known as the “gut microbiome,” these bacteri...

The glycan CA19-9 promotes pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer in mice
Glycosylation alterations are indicative of tissue inflammation and neoplasia, but whether these alterations contribute to disease pathogenesis is largely unknown. To study the role of glycan changes in pancreatic disease, we inducibly expressed human fucosyltransferase 3 and β1,3-galactosyltransferase 5 in mice, reconstituting the glycan sialyl-Lewisa, also known as carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9). Notably, CA19-9 expression in mice resulted in rapid and severe pancreatitis with hyperactivation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling. Mechanistically, CA19-9 modification of the matricellular protein f...
