Cell Therapy for Epithelial Cancers
Cell therapy is an emerging treatment modality that is highly effective in hematological cancers. Research by Dr. Hinrichs ’ s team has demonstrated the potential to extend cell therapy to the treatment of common epithelial cancers. Treatment of patients with human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes showed durable, complete tumor responses, apparently curing some patients with metastatic cancer. A more “ off the shelf ” approach with peripheral blood T cells genetically engineered to target the HPV E7 antigen also demonstrated robust clinical activity with extensive tumor regr...

Human Oncogenic Viruses: Nature and Discovery
This is the annual George Khoury Lecture. Speaker Yuan Chang, M.D., University of Pittsburgh, performs basic and applied research on viral oncogenesis with efforts focused in the following three areas. Merkel cell carcinoma and Merkel cell polyomavirus: We recently discovered a new human polyomavirus, that we call Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV). This virus is etiologically associated with a rare, but one of the most clinically aggressive skin cancers in humans. We are currently involved in the primary characteristics of this virus including transcript mapping, transforming properties, origin replication, transmission, and ...

Cell Atlases as Roadmaps in Health and Disease
Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series Dr. Regev is Executive Vice President of Research and Early Development at Genentech, a subsidiary of Roche. She has earned praise for creating technologies to expand understanding of biological processes, such as assays for sequencing RNA in single cells and associated machine learning algorithm s. She also co-leads the Human Cell Atlas project, which aims to describe all cell types in the human body. She is currently on leave from her longstanding positions at MIT and at the Broad Institute. Cells are the basic unit of life and form a key intermediate between genotype and phenotype, wh...

Protective and Pathogenic B Cell Responses: COVID-19 and Autoimmunity
Dr. Sanz's research interest is in understanding how the immune system goes awry in autoimmune diseases and ends up attacking our own tissues rather than concentrating on fighting infections. In particular, he is very interested in understanding the roles played in autoimmune diseases by B cells and their effector progeny, the plasma cells responsible for producing the autoantibodies that in many cases cause the disease. His research concentrates on systemic lupus erythematosus, but he is also investigating other autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes. His work also has app...
