NIH/FDA IIG Seminar - Exciting Hematopoietic Stem Cells
Prof. Gazit studies hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) – the adult stem cells that give rise to all types of blood and immune cells. Not only are HSCs of vital importance for the entire blood and immune system, but they are also the functional unit enabling bone marrow transplants. HSCs are already saving tens of thousands of patients every year by using them in bone marrow transplants. Prof. Gazit ’ s lab seeks to directly reprogram blood cells back to HSCs in order to generate novel models for leukemia study and understand HSCs within the immune response. Using advanced molecular biology enables the discovery of key reg...

Health Disparities among Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGM) - Day 2
The goal of this virtual two-day meeting is to identify priority research areas to understand and address SGM health disparities. Specifically, the workshop objectives are to identify research gaps in: (1) data sources and measures that can be used to assess and address SGM health disparities, (2) mechanisms and pathways that drive/cause SGM health disparities, and (3) interventions with the potential to mitigate/reduce SGM health disparities. The workshop will bring together a diverse set of researchers with expertise on important health outcomes (e.g., cancer, mental/behavioral health, cardiovascular disease, diabetes an...

Overcoming the Undruggable Nature of the Most Common Human Oncogene K-Ras
NIH Director's WALS Lecture Kevan Shokat is a chemist who discovers drugs against some of the most common drivers of human cancers. He is best known for targeting a mutation that drives more than 1 in 10 lung cancers, opening up a new arena of cancer treatment discovery. The target, K-Ras, is the most common driver of cancer, and was considered “ undruggable ” by most cancer researchers after 40 years of failed attempts to block its function. Dr. Shokat ’ s discovery of a K-Ras blocker broke through this decades-old barrier and threw open the doors to a new class of cancer treatments. Lecture summary: 1. To understa...

NIH Director's Seminar - Addressing evolving and emerging public health questions with descriptive epidemiology
NIH Director's Seminar Series Well-conducted surveillance studies have long informed hypotheses related to the causes of cancer, highlighted the population-level impact of exposures and interventions and guided additional research, prevention efforts and public health resources. The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has been generating etiologic clues from monitoring cancer trends and mapping cancer mortality for decades. In this lecture, Dr. Shiels will describe her research program, which utilizes a combination of innovative contemporary approaches to confront high...
