Impact of Leave of Absence on matching
Hello SDNers, I'm a Canadian M3 medical student, interested in a competitive specialty (highly competitive in the US, and moderately competitive in Canada). I'm a strong medical student academically with no concerns thus far. Received outstanding evaluations during all the rotations I completed, and have adequate research in the field I'm interested in. Unfortunately, last summer, right before beginning M3, my mother was involved in a major car accident resulting in severe injuries to her... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Top Canadian MD now or try again in the US
Hi Everyone, I'm a dual Canadian/US citizen. My MCAT expired last year and due to substantial personal and career-related time restrictions, I was unable to retake it. Instead, I decided to apply to just the handful of US schools which would take me, as well one top Canadian school. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it didn't work out with the US schools (though I did get an HMS interview). However, I have been invited to interview at the Canadian school! Post-interview acceptance rates are very... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WAMC 3.98GPA (3.45grad GPA) 512 MCAT, nontraditional
Hi there - I am seeking help on a school list, please! I see myself in primary care with an interest in research (perhaps not as a clinician-scientist, but at least contributing to clinical trials, etc.) Undergraduate: cGPA 3.97, sGPA 3.98 from a liberal arts institution Graduate: 3.45 GPA with a PhD in a physical science from a T20 research institution MCAT 512 (129/127/128/128) - I was aiming for higher and am contemplating an idea of a retake. WAMC | ORM CDN Applicant | sGPA: 3.96, 516 MCAT | Competitiveness for US MD
Hey guys, this is my first post on this sub. Was hoping to get an impression of how competitive or not of an applicant I'd be if I was to apply to the US the upcoming cycle. I've been able to attain interviews in Canada, but with no post-II success thus far, I'm looking to widen my net. I have pretty decent research/employment experience, with a clear commitment in music, mentorship, and service. I think the most gaping hole in my application would be the lack of shadowing experience given... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anesthesia-CCM fellowships with closed, mixed ICUs?
Hi everyone, I'm a Canadian Anesthesia resident interested in doing Anes-CCM training in the US and hoping for some advice. At most Canadian centers, ICUs still run in a closed unit, mixed-ICU model (with trauma/micu/sicu etc patients all in the same ICU) with most academic centers having specialized CSICUs (run mainly by cardiac anes without formal ICU training). As many of you know, our CCM training is standardized across all base specialities and we all do the same 2 year fellowship... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Asco gi & asco gu
Hey! ASCO-GI abstracts are out, ASCO-GU abstracts will become available in mid February. My picks for ASCO-GI: https://meetings.asco.org/abstracts-presentations/217307 Neo-AEGIS demonstrating comparable OS with either Magic/FLOT or CROSS. CROSS leads to better downstaging and less toxicity. Limitation: majority of Magic/FLOT arm had Magic, which isn't as active as FLOT. https://meetings.asco.org/abstracts-presentations/215519 Reasonable randomized Canadian trial looking at... Internationally Trained Physicians: The Myth of Canada
Recently released report from Simon Fraser University on marginalization of ITPs in Canada. Systemic barriers seem to make little sense in the face of shortages of physicians Canada is currently facing in all provinces. https://radiussfu.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/The-Myth-Of-Canada_DIGITAL.pdf (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How can I get US Private Loan co-signed by American Relative?
I am a Canadian citizen thats going to school in august of this year. I am unable to secure a Canadian Loan as I don't have any Canadian co-signers. I have an American uncle who is willing to co-sign for me. What is the process like for that? Has anyone used an American relative to co-sign for them on a student loan? USMD student (US citizen) interested in practicing in Canada after residency - should I take MCCQEs now?
I'm a third year MD student, US citizen, looking to practice in Canada (maybe Ontario) after completing residency and fellowship in the US. As a US citizen, I know CARMS is out of the question, so I have to do NRMP / residency + fellowship in the US first. My question is, should I take MCCQEs or not? Are there any pros / cons that are substantially different between these 2 options? Option 1: take MCCQEs around the time of my USMLEs -> receive LMCC, look for jobs in Canada after... Optometry School Requirements
So for most optometry schools, under their pre-req requirements, it says "one course" or "one semester or one quarter." I'm a Canadian student, what is the difference between the two? Also, for calculus, many of these schools want "one course," but introductory calculus is only offered as a 0.5 credit for a half term (one semester) at my university. Does this mean I will have to take another calculus course as well? Secondly, how are Canadian GPAs translated in America? Do they remain the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
