Plasma Metabolomic Biomarkers for Detecting Heart Allograft Acute Rejection: A Pilot Study
Purpose: Heart transplantation (HTx) is a life-saving procedure for end-stage heart failure, but acute cellular rejection (ACR) affects 20-30% of recipients in the first 3 months post-HTx. Current ACR diagnosis via endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) is costly and invasive. Our goal is to develop a tool to quickly identify ACR in an accurate, cost-effective, and non-invasive manner, allowing for long-term monitoring of HTx recipients. We chose an untargeted metabolomics approach using mass spectrometry to discover a diagnoistic biomarker panel, aiming to improve the performance of a clinical assay in either or both sensitivity and...

Improving Multimodal Physical Function in Adults with Heterogeneous Chronic Pain: Protocol for A Multisite Feasibility Randomized Control Trial
Chronic pain is associated with substantial impairment in physical function, which has been identified as a top concern among persons with pain. GetActive-Fitbit, a mind-body activity program, is feasible, acceptable, and associated with improvement in physical function among primarily White, sedentary individuals with pain. In preparation for a multisite efficacy trial, we must examine feasibility across multiple sites with diverse patient populations. Here we describe the protocol of a multisite, feasibility RCT comparing GetActive-Fitbit with a time- and attention-matched educational comparison (Healthy Living for Pain)...

Euphorbia Bicolor Phytochemicals Reduce Oxidative Stress, Inflammatory Mediators, and Pain Signaling in a Rat Model of Burn Pain
Pain associated with burn injury has been linked to oxidative stress, inflammation, and nociceptor sensitization and can lead to chronic pain. Burn pain is challenging to manage with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids, and gabapentinoids; all of which are linked to undesirable side effects. Novel strategies that mitigate burn pain are needed. Euphorbia bicolor, a native Texas plant, contains phytochemicals that could serve as a novel analgesic(s). We hypothesized that E. bicolor phytochemicals reduce pain and inflammatory key markers present in the blood, sensory ganglia, and spinal cord that contribute to burn...

Amination and crosslinking of acetone-fractionated hardwood kraft lignin using different amines and aldehydes for sustainable bio-based wood adhesives
Bioresour Technol. 2024 Mar 28:130645. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130645. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHardwood kraft lignin from the pulping industry is burned or discarded. Its valorization was conducted by subjecting fractionation, amination with ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, and monoethanolamine, and crosslinking with formaldehyde or glyoxal to obtain bio-based wood adhesives. Acetone-soluble and insoluble hardwood kraft lignin were prepared and subjected to amination and then crosslinking. Fourier transform infrared, 13C NMR, 15N NMR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed successful amination...

Effects of Trauma Center Consolidation on Adult Trauma at a Rural Level 1 Trauma Center
CONCLUSION: The consolidation of trauma services to a single level 1 trauma center in a rural Appalachian health system led to higher trauma volume and acuity, but most importantly decreased mortality for the most severely injured trauma patients.PMID:38551609 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241241703 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Trends of Self-Inflicted Firearm Injuries at a Rural Level 1 Trauma Center
This study included 201 patients, of which 124 (61.7%) were accidental and 77 (38.3%) were intentional self-inflicted gunshot wounds (GSWs) sustained over 6 years at a rural level 1 trauma center. Injury severity scores (P < .001), hospital days (P < .001), and mortality (P < .001) were significantly higher among intentional self-inflicted GSWs. Injuries to the head were the most common injury among patients with intentional self-inflicted GSWs (P < .001).Accidental and intentional self-inflicted GSWs make up a large portion of firearm injuries seen at our rural level 1 trauma center, and defining these injurie...

Lung Cancer Survival Trends in the Veterans Health Administration
CONCLUSION: Lung cancer survival is improving within the VHA. Compared to White Veterans, Black Veterans had similar or higher survival rates. The observed racial equity in outcomes within a geographically and socioeconomically diverse population warrants further investigation to better understand and replicate this achievement in other healthcare systems.PMID:38553325 | DOI:10.1016/j.cllc.2024.02.009 (Source: Clinical Lung Cancer)

Presence of metallic components in transdermal drug delivery systems and risk of skin burns
CONCLUSION: More than a half of the patches at the time of the study contained metals or their absence could not be confirmed by the manufacturer. However, this information was only included in 13.6% of summaries of product characteristics.PMID:38553258 | DOI:10.1016/j.farma.2024.02.010 (Source: Farmacia Hospitalaria)
