Global Surgery: Burn Outreach by Shriners Children's Texas
Semin Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0044-1785217Global surgery describes a rapidly developing field that seeks to improve surgical treatment internationally, specifically in those specialized treatments that are not readily accessible, considered complex and expensive. Burns cause 300,000 deaths annually, 90% of which occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).Burns are a public health problem since they can cause disability and death. Shriners Children's Texas is a unique model of global surgery for an important number of countries in Central and South Americas and Mexico, providing specialized acute burn care with low...

Two-phase mechanism in the treatment of corneal stromal fibrosis with topical losartan
Exp Eye Res. 2024 Apr 1:109884. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2024.109884. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent studies in rabbits and case reports in humans have demonstrated the efficacy of topical losartan in the treatment of corneal scarring fibrosis after a wide range of injuries, including chemical burns, infections, surgical complications, and some diseases. It is hypothesized that the effect of losartan on the fibrotic corneal stroma occurs through a two-phase process in which losartan first triggers the elimination of myofibroblasts by directing their apoptosis via inhibition of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-m...

Operative Management and Outcome of Idiopathic Rectal Necrosis in an Octogenarian
This report describes an 83-year-old man presenting with septic shock due to distal sigmoid and complete rectal necrosis with perforation. He underwent emergent exploratory laparotomy, sigmoid and proximal rectum resection, and end sigmoid colostomy creation with delayed distal rectal evaluation. Bedside proctoscopy revealed pale, viable-appearing distal rectal mucosa on postoperative day 3. The patient had a protracted, complicated hospital stay but required no further operative intervention. Subsequent colostomy reversal was done 8 months postoperatively, and the patient did well and has been discharged with normal gastr...

Home respiratory strategies in COPD patients with chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2282: The Impacts of Burn Severity and Frequency on Erosion in Western Arnhem Land, Australia
This study aims to investigate the relationships between surface erosion rates and wildfire intensity in the tropical north savanna of Australia. The occurrence of fires in western Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia was determined with remotely sensed digital datasets as well as analogue erosion measurement methods. Analysis was performed using satellite imagery to quantify burn severity via a monthly delta normalised burn ratio (dNBR). This was compared and correlated against on-ground erosion measurements (erosion pins) for 13 years. The dNBR for each year (up to +0.4) displayed no relationship with subsequent er...

Early Predictors of Health-Related Quality of Life Outcomes at 12 Months Post-Burn: ABLE study
There remains a paucity of evidence on the early predictors of long-term Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) outcomes post-burn in hospitalised adults. The overall aim of this study was to identify the factors (personal, environmental, burn injury and burn treatment factors) that may predict long-term HRQoL outcomes among adult survivors of hospitalised burn injuries at 12 months post-burn. A total of 274 participants, aged 18 years or over, admitted to a single state-wide burn centre with a burn injury were recruited. (Source: Injury)

‘Now we know where the dead went.’ Did grave robbers plunder battlefields?
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a succession of wars ravaged Europe. Massive armies squared off and massacred each other using cannon and rifle fire and mass cavalry charges that claimed tens of thousands of casualties in hours. At the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte’s final battle, more than 10,000 men and as many horses were killed in a single day. Yet today, archaeologists often struggle to find physical evidence of the dead from that bloody time period. Plowing and construction are usually the culprits behind missing historical remains, but they can’t explain the loss here. How did so many bo...

A systematic review of the prevalence of burnout in orthopaedic surgeons
CONCLUSIONS: Nearly one in two orthopaedic surgeons are burnt out. There is a paucity of data on the short and long-term impact of COVID-19 on burnout. Burnout has deep organisational, personal and clinical implications. Targeted organisational interventions are required to prevent burnout from irrevocably damaging the future of orthopaedic surgery.PMID:38563052 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2024.0009 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)
