Different Influence Pattern of Conventional and Alternative Sources of Smoking on Adhesion Molecules and Cytokine Secretion in THP-1 Monocytes
CONCLUSION: Our data indicate differential immunological consequences of different conventional and alternative smoking sources with and without nicotine. Further comprehensive analysis as well as in vivo investigations on peripheral blood monocyte subsets from smoking individuals using different smoking sources are required to better understand the impact on monocyte characteristics, especially with regard to the development of cancer.PMID:38537980 | DOI:10.21873/anticanres.16941 (Source: Cell Research)

Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis in Hong Kong
CONCLUSION: This study showed that SJS/TEN are uncommon in Hong Kong but can cause substantial morbidity and mortality. Early recognition, prompt withdrawal of offending agents, and multidisciplinary supportive management are essential for improving clinical outcomes.PMID:38531617 | DOI:10.12809/hkmj2210131 (Source: Hong Kong Medical Journal)

Analysis of 10-year income trends for pharmacists and other select health professionals
CONCLUSION: Growth in pharmacist income is projected to lag behind that in other health professions in the near future. Individual-, organization-, and profession-level strategies may facilitate opportunities for income growth among pharmacists.PMID:38530987 | DOI:10.1093/ajhp/zxae087 (Source: American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy : AJHP)

Evidence that keratinocyte microvesicle particles carrying Platelet-activating factor mediate the widespread multi-organ damage associated with intoxicated thermal burn injury
J Leukoc Biol. 2024 Mar 26:qiae078. doi: 10.1093/jleuko/qiae078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThermal burn injuries can result in significant morbidity and mortality. The combination of ethanol intoxication with thermal burn injury results in increased morbidity through an exaggerated inflammatory response involving many organs. Recent studies have linked involvement of the lipid mediator Platelet-activating factor (PAF) in the pathology associated with intoxicated thermal burn injury (ITBI). The present studies tested the roles of PAF and the elevated levels of subcellular microvesicle particles (MVP) generated in respon...
