Ovarian Epithelial Inclusions With Mucinous Differentiation: A Clinicopathologic Study of 42 Cases
Ovarian epithelial inclusions lined by mucinous epithelium are rare and of uncertain origin. Ovaries containing such inclusions were studied in 42 women. The inclusions were divided into 3 groups: serous epithelial lined with typical ciliated morphology but with distinct basophilic cytoplasmic mucin in some or all of the lining cells, those lined by typical mucinous epithelium, and those lined by a combination of typical mucinous epithelium and serous epithelium. The mean patient age was 61.5 years. Pure mucinous inclusions were found in 27 patients, serous-type inclusions with cytoplasmic mucin in 20, and mixed type in 10...

Malignancy risk of sonographically benign appearing purely solid adnexal masses in asymptomatic postmenopausal women
Conclusions: The risk of malignancy of benign appearing purely solid adnexal masses in asymptomatic postmenopausal women is low. Conservative management of these lesions might be an option. (Source: Menopause)

Vaginal Brenner tumor with literature review: does this tumour originate from Walthard nests?
Authors: Park S, Cho MS Abstract Vaginal Brenner tumor is extremely rare. Only five cases have been reported in the English literature to date. Here we report a vaginal Brenner tumor in a 76-year old postmenopausal woman, who presented with a 2.5cm-sized sessile vaginal polyp. Microscopically, it showed characteristic features of Brenner tumor consisting of three components; transitional islands, glands, and dense fibrous stroma. The epithelial tumor cells were positive for GATA-3, p63 and ER, but negative for PAX8. The origin of Brenner tumors in the vagina is unclear, but previous reports suggested of MÃ...

A peculiar case report of extraovarian Brenner tumor arising in the omentum
Brenner tumors almost always develop in the ovary. Exceptionally, extraovarian Brenner tumors have been reported in the lower abdomen or pelvic organs. Here, we introduce a peculiar case of an extraovarian Bre... (Source: World Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Is Imprint Cytology Useful to Diagnose Malignancy for Brenner Tumors A Case Series at a Single Institute
Conclusion: Imprint cytology of Brenner tumors provided no characteristic findings to enable a definitive distinction of benign versus borderline tumors, but it enabled discrimination between malignant and other tumors. Imprint cytology can facilitate intraoperative diagnosis and aid in selecting the appropriate surgical procedure.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Borderline Brenner tumors associated with ovarian cyst - case presentation.
We present the case of a 64-year patient who was diagnosed with right ovary cyst. The histopathological examination highlighted the presence of a borderline Brenner tumor at the same time with the cystic lesion, on the same ovary. The surgical treatment led to a complete cure of the patient, so that the yearly ultrasound reexamination did not trace the presence of any tumoral relapse. Testosterone Aromatization to Estradiol in Course of Ovarian Functioning Brenner Tumor Associated With Endometrial Carcinoma and Endometriosis (Roncati-Manenti Triad)
Conclusions: This synchronous triad underlines the importance of aromatization and hyperestrogenism in the development of gynecological malignancies in which the immunohistochemical detection of an active source of hormone production — to always keep in consideration during synchronous diseases — can guide subsequent antihormone chemotherapy based on aromatase inhibitors. Benign and Malignant Brenner Tumors Show an Absence of TERT Promoter Mutations That Are Commonly Present in Urothelial Carcinoma
Brenner tumors are uncommon ovarian neoplasms, which have morphologic and immunophenotypical features of transitional cell (urothelial) differentiation. The origin of Brenner tumors is perplexing, but they are believed to arise from transitional cell metaplasia occurring within the ovary and/or fallopian tube, although it is controversial whether this metaplasia is truly along transitional cell lines. Recently, TERT promoter mutations have been identified in urothelial carcinoma (UC) with high frequency (approximately 70%), and the current literature suggests a potential diagnostic and/or prognostic role of these mutations...

Brenner tumour of the ovary--an incidental histological finding.
Authors: Tsikouras P, Galazios G, Romanidis K, Pinidis P, Liberis A, Giatromanolaki A, Sivridis E Abstract Brenner tumours of the ovary are uncommon neoplasms and mostly benign. There is general agreement that Brenner tumors are derived from the surface epithelium of the ovary or the pelvic mesothelium through transitional cell metaplasia. It is essential to categorise these tumours as benign, borderline or malignant type as the biologic behaviour and choice of surgery differs in all of the three categories. The authors report a case of Brenner tumour that had only a single area with a beginning indistinct...

Enormous ovarian fibroma with elevated Ca-125 associated with Meigs' syndrome. Presentation of a rare case.
Authors: Sofoudis C, Kouiroukidou P, Louis K, Karasaridou K, Toutounas K, Gerolymatos A, Papamargaritis E Abstract In medicine, Meigs' syndrome is the triad of ascites, pleural effusion, and benign ovarian tumor (fibroma, Brenner tumour, and occasionally granulosa cell tumour). It resolves after the resection of the tumor. Because the transdiaphragmatic lymphatic channels are larger in diameter on the right, the pleural effusion is classically on the right side. The etiologies of the ascites and pleural effusion are poorly understood. Atypical Meigs' syndrome, characterized by a benign pelvic mass with righ...

The Dualistic Model of Ovarian Carcinogenesis: Revisited, Revised, and Expanded.
Abstract Since our proposal of a dualistic model of epithelial ovarian carcinogenesis more than a decade ago, a large number of molecular and histopathologic studies were published that have provided important insights into the origin and molecular pathogenesis of this disease. This has required that the original model be revised and expanded to incorporate these findings. The new model divides type I tumors into three groups: i) endometriosis-related tumors that include endometrioid, clear cell, and seromucinous carcinomas; ii) low-grade serous carcinomas; and iii) mucinous carcinomas and malignant Brenn...

Morphologic, Immunophenotypic, and Molecular Features of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer.
Abstract Epithelial ovarian cancer comprises a heterogeneous group of tumors. The four most common subtypes are serous, endometrioid, clear cell, and mucinous carcinoma. Less common are transitional cell tumors, including transitional cell carcinoma and malignant Brenner tumor. While in the past these subtypes were grouped together and designated as epithelial ovarian tumors, these tumor types are now known to be separate entities with distinct clinical and biologic behaviors. From a therapeutic standpoint, current regimens employ standard chemotherapy based on stage and grade rather than histotype. Howeve...
