Dune Medical Devices has designed a reposable version of its MarginProbe radiofrequency spectropscopy device, which can help surgeons identify remaining cancer cells in real time during a lumpectomy.

Phyllis Lacetti found her own breast cancer when she felt an abnormal lump in her right breast in 2007. A nurse at Montefiore Medical Center, she had a lumpectomy to remove it, but an MRI afterward revealed remaining cancer cells, so she opted to get a mastectomy.

FDA clears Cianna Medical ’ s Savi Scout breast cancer locator for long term implants
Cianna Medical said today that the Savi Scout reflector, part of its system for wire-free breast tumor localization, won FDA clearance as the first non-radioactive implant without a restriction on the length of time that the reflector can remain in a patient’s breast.
The new clearance means that doctors can place Scout to mark a biopsy or lumpectomy site and not be constrained by a maximum implant time, the Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based company said. The Scout reflector also won’t interfere with MRI studies, so doctors aren’t restricted in the types of imaging modalities they can use with their patients.

iCad wins Chinese approval for Xoft Axxent balloon applicators
iCad (NSDQ:ICAD) said today its Xoft Axxent balloon applicators have been cleared by the China Food & Drug Administration for treating early-stage breast cancer.
The Nashua, N.H.-based company’s Xoft Axxent balloon applicators are part of its Xoft Axxent electronic brachytherapy system designed to perform intraoperative radiation therapy in early-stage breast cancer patients who meet specific selection criteria.

Dune Medical Devices said today it is relocating its US headquarters to Alpharetta, Ga., near Atlanta, from Paoli, Penn. as the company looks to expand its portfolio and improve uptake and reimbursement for its MarginProbe device.
