Dune Medical debuts waste-saving surgical probe
Dune Medical Devices has designed a reposable version of its MarginProbe radiofrequency spectropscopy device, which can help surgeons identify remaining cancer cells in real time during a lumpectomy. The updated MarginProbe has a  reusable cable and handle and a single-use attachable probe. It has the potential to reduce waste burden of the MarginProbe up to 50%, according to the company. The technology uses radio-frequency (RF) electrical fields to probe the surface of the cancerous lump removed from the breast, enabling the surgeon to remove additional tissue from the breast during the same procedure and avoid follow-u...

More Women With Breast Cancer May Soon Be Skipping Chemo. Here ’s Why

How a Tiny Breast Cancer Device Carries Big Value
With all the uncertainty in today's healthcare system, the one thing everyone seems to agree on is that value-based care is here to stay. Cianna Medical understands that particularly well, and the company's latest FDA clearance is expected to add even more value to the continuum of care for breast cancer patients and their providers. Cianna's Savi Scout reflector can now be implanted in breast cancer patients without restrictions on the length of time that it can remain in the breast. FDA clears Cianna Medical ’ s Savi Scout breast cancer locator for long term implants
Cianna Medical said today that the Savi Scout reflector, part of its system for wire-free breast tumor localization, won FDA clearance as the first non-radioactive implant without a restriction on the length of time that the reflector can remain in a patient’s breast. The new clearance means that doctors can place Scout to mark a biopsy or lumpectomy site and not be constrained by a maximum implant time, the Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based company said. The Scout reflector also won’t interfere with MRI studies, so doctors aren’t restricted in the types of imaging modalities they can use with their patients. The...

Why More Women Are Getting a Double Mastectomy
Recent research has shown that despite more having more treatment options, women with cancer in one breast are increasingly choosing to remove both breasts—even though experts in the field say the procedure is not necessarily accompanied by better outcomes. Now, a new study published Wednesday in JAMA Surgery finds that the increase is being driven in part by their surgeons. Doctors generally discourage contralateral prophylactic mastectomy—also known as CPM, or the removal of a healthy breast when the other has cancer—for women at an average risk for additional breast cancer. They do recommend it for wo...
