Treat borderline personality disorder with psychotherapy and concomitant psychiatric disorders with adjuvant pharmacotherapy
AbstractNo class of medications has consistently improved symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in randomized clinical trials, and no pharmacological treatment has been approved specifically for BPD. Psychotherapy is the treatment of first choice in BPD, and the general consensus is that pharmacotherapy should be used mainly for the treatment of comorbid disorders. However, most patients with BPD are medicated even when they do not have comorbidities. (Source: Drugs and Therapy Perspectives)

Psychotropic medication use among adolescents participating in three randomized trials of DBT
ConclusionsHighly prevalent in use among suicidal and self-harming adolescents with borderline features, psychotropic medication was still very unevenly prescribed across trials, differences not explained by differences in sample characteristics suggesting that current treatment practices are not fully empirically supported. We call for continued medical education and increased availability of evidence-based psychosocial interventions. (Source: Borderline Personality Disorder and Emotion Dysregulation)

Longitudinal examination of borderline personality disorder symptoms and drug use: The influence of negative and positive emotion dysregulation
We examined the independent and interactive associations of BPD symptoms and emotion dysregulation in reported drug use over 1 year. Participants (N = 143) were over-recruited for BPD, assessed via interview, and completed measures of negative and positive emotion dysregulation. Drug use frequency was assessed with monthly surveys over a 1-year period. Results demonstrated interrelations among BPD symptoms and both negative and positive emo tion dysregulation. However, when modeling BPD and emotion dysregulation together, only higher BPD symptoms were associated with more frequent drug use. Findings support the relati...

An analysis of real-time suicidal ideation and its relationship with retrospective reports among young people with borderline personality disorder
CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that young people with BPD experience high levels of fluctuation in their intensity of suicidal ideation across a week and that retrospective reports of suicidal ideation might be more reflective of the most intense experience of suicidal ideation across the week.PMID:38375970 | DOI:10.1111/sltb.13058 (Source: Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior)

Designing Community Services for People With Borderline Personality Disorder to Reduce Hospitalizations
This study (N=42 patients), conducted in Liverpool, United Kingdom, reviewed the effect on out-of-area treatments (OATs) and hospital admissions of establishing a local case management team and a combined day treatment and crisis service for patients who are too dysregulated to access typical office-based psychotherapy. Data from 12, 24, and 36 months postintervention were compared with baseline data. All patients in OATs were repatriated to the local community. No new patients were sent to OATs. Admissions decreased (at 12 months, 49%; 24 months, 64%; 36 months, 74%), achieving savings in hospitalization costs. Moderate i...
