Engineered tissue could eliminate radiation for bone marrow transplants
Engineered bone with functional marrow. [Image courtesy Varghese lab, UC San Diego]University of California San Diego engineers have created artificial bone tissue that could eliminate the need for radiation before bone marrow transplants. Shyni Varghese, a bioengineering professor at UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, led a team to develop a bone-like implant to eliminate the pre-treatment radiation that kills stem cells in a patient’s bone marrow to make room for new marrow. The newly engineered bone tissues give donor cells space room to live and grow without having to compete with pre-existing host cells, wh...

The Ryan Gibson Foundation of Dallas awarded on Friday $500,000 for cancer research in the new precision medicine program at Arkansas Children’s Research Institute. "Precision medicine uses information from a given to design a medical plan for an individual based on his or her environment, lifestyle, health condition and genetic makeup," Greg Kearns, president of the Arkansas Children's Research Institute, said in a news release. "The goal of precision cancer medicine in conditions such as cancer is to customize treatments by tailoring them to the genetic characteristics of not only a patient but in some circumstance...

Pioneering stem cell gene therapy cures infants with bubble baby disease
FINDINGSUCLA researchers have developed a stem cell gene therapy cure for babies born with adenosine deaminase-deficient severe combined immunodeficiency, a rare and life-threatening condition that can be fatal within the first year of life if left untreated. In a phase 2 clinical trial led by Dr. Donald Kohn of the  Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA, all nine babies were cured. A 10th trial participant was a teenager at the time of treatment and showed no signs of immune system recovery. Kohn’s treatment method, a stem cell gene therapy that safely restores immune syste...

The stem cell therapy that could reverse hearing loss
Frequency Therapeutics is betting that it can change the lives of millions of Americans with hearing loss, by triggering the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Researchers have used cells in regenerative medicine for decades – in 1931, the father of cell therapy, Paul Niehans, treated a patient with material from calf embryos. Although today’s healthcare practitioners have left bovine embryonic cells behind, procedures such as bone marrow transplants are routinely used to replenish a patient’s cells after they’ve been destroyed. When scientists first derived stem cells in 1981 – a decade after Niehans’s d...
