It took a team of UCLA medical professionals and the generosity of 71 strangers to save 2-year-old Skye Savren-McCormick ’s life.The toddler from Ventura, California, required frequent blood and platelet transfusions, often on a daily basis, while undergoing three grueling bone-marrow transplants, surgery to remove her swollen spleen and seven rounds of chemotherapy for leukemia and lymphoma. Bone marrow program for Oishei Children's receives go-ahead from state
With the new John R. Oishei Children ’s Hospital set to open in less than two months, state officials on Wednesday approved a new pediatric bone marrow transplant program to be housed at the site.
The program calls for adding the program on the 12th floor in an inpatient oncology unit to be co-managed by Roswell Park Cancer Institut e. The cancer hospital’s existing bone marrow transplant program can only treat children five years and older.
