Reviewing Old Journal Entries
While doing my water fast this past week (today is day 8), I spent many hours rereading some of my old journal entries from the 1990s. I’ve been journaling for many years, but I rarely go back and review what I’ve written. For some reason I just had the intuitive feeling that I should do it this week. This was harder than I expected since the 90s were a turbulent time for me. I read a journal entry I wrote shortly after being arrested for felony grand theft when I was 19, describing how badly I needed to fix my life and how difficult I thought it would be. I read entries from the years I was sinking into debt, ...

Water Fasting Trial
I’m currently doing a water fasting experiment, mainly to see what effect it has on mental clarity and detox. The biggest motivator for me is probably curiosity. Today I’m starting Day 6, so I’ve gone 5 days with no food so far. The first 3-4 days were tough, but it’s getting easier. I tried water fasting once many years ago, but I only lasted 2-1/2 days because I was ignorant about what to expect. I quit when the hunger felt really intense, figuring that it would be a miserable experience if I tried to keep going. This time I did more research before starting (All About Fasting was especially helpf...

Controlling Your Own Schedule
Sometimes people use their job as their blanket excuse for not being in control of their schedule. “Oh… I can’t because I have a job,” is the main reason people give for not being able to do 30-day trials, experience extended travel, and do immersive deep dives. However, during periods without a job, these same people often switch to a different excuse. Oh… I can’t because I’m unemployed right now. Self-employed people do this too. Oh… I can’t because I have to work. Work will come and go. Your finances may fluctuate over time. But no matter what, time is passing. Yo...

Naked Social Approaches
Here’s a 3-minute video of my friend Fred demonstrating his boundless social courage by approaching people on the street, starting up conversations, and getting some phone numbers – while fully naked. Later in the video you’ll see Shogo participating as well. Fred and Shogo are two of the guys with whom I recorded the Imaginary Men audio program. In that program we talk about our personal growth and relationship journeys, and Fred shares how he was once diagnosed with social anxiety disorder and what he did to overcome it and push himself to face his fears. Caring for Your Mind
The quality of your mind determines the quality of your life. If your thinking is foggy, unfocused, circular, or random, your results will reflect that. If your mind is sharp, focused, and clear, your results will reflect that too. If you care about having a good life, then care about cultivating a strong mind since a strong mind will provide you with a good life. Address Weaknesses If you’ve been weakening your mind in some obvious ways, know that caring for your mind requires addressing these weaknesses. If you consume alcohol, scale it back or drop it from your life. Alcohol is a neurotoxin known to damage the bra...

Patterns of Success
People usually succeed in the long run. This is the pattern I see in my long-term readers. They may take a while to get moving on their goals at first. They may endure some false starts and setbacks. They may procrastinate now and then. But if a goal is important to them, such as creating passive income streams or finding a fulfilling relationship, they do eventually succeed. Not all of them succeed of course. Some give up. Some get sucked back into social groups that influence them to fall off track. Some drift aimlessly without finding their focus. But by and large, the people who persist do eventually succeed. If they k...

Conscious Mind Workshop – $100 Discount (Last Day)
The early bird registration for the upcoming 3-day Conscious Mind Workshop ends on Tuesday, August 2nd. After that the price goes up by $100. Most of the attendees went out to dinner with Rachelle and me afterwards, and we shared personal growth stories for four hours. If you have any questions about the Conscious...

Dealing with Irrational People
How do you deal with irrational people in your life? Do they frustrate you? Do you feel a strong need to make such people see reason? Have you been successful with this approach? Of course we all have some rational and irrational aspects, so labeling another person as all-around irrational may be a bit of a stretch, so if you don’t like the irrational people label, you can soften it to “people who behave irrationally with you sometimes.” Your Irrational Side One of the best ways to handle the irrationality of others is to acknowledge and make peace with your own irrational side. When you accept that you d...

Promoting a Live Event: Convincing vs. Inviting
It probably won’t surprise you that I’ve received some emails from people who say they’d like to attend an upcoming workshop but that it would be a financial challenge to make it happen. Some people have pointed out the irony of not being able to afford the Conscious Abundance Workshop. My response is normally just to agree with them. I don’t want to convince them to go. If I’ve never met them, I really can’t tell if they’re a good match to be there. And I don’t know the extent of their financial challenges or their readiness to change. Only they can decide whether to go. My ...

How to Tip From Scarcity to Abundance
You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water, my friend. ― Bruce Lee Many people struggle to shift from a scarcity-based lifestyle to an abundance-based lifestyle. In this article I’ll share some of the shifts that people have experienced shortly before they reach their abundance tipping point, with the intention of helping you reach your own abundance tipping point sooner. How to Bypass Resistance
You may have heard this quote from German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer: All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident. Here’s a variation on this idea that we can use for personal growth transitions: All growth passes through three stages. First, you’ll be ridiculed. Second, your efforts will meet with serious opposition. Third, you’ll be accepted as the new person you’ve become. Have you seen this pattern show up in your life? I’ve run through it many times. Lots of readers have run this pattern. ...

I’ve been doing a lot of one-on-one meetups lately since many people came to Vegas for the 4th of July holiday weekend. I’ve also been hearing that some people almost didn’t ask to meet up because they felt a bit shy about doing so. I really enjoy these meetups — I have another one this afternoon and one or two more later this week — and I’m happy to encourage more people to go for it. This is my version of social media. Taking Control of Your Degree Path
A reader named Jon shared the following story, which he gave me permission to publish: I just wanted to write you a quick, long-overdue thank you. Four years ago, during my senior year of college, I realized I should have majored in CS. It would have taken 3 years to switch majors (from business) and get a CS degree, and I didn’t have the money to continue going to school past graduation, so I decided – based entirely on your posts about how you got your CS degree in 3 semesters) – to start a Software Development associates at the local community college while finishing my senior year of business school. ...

Where to Invade Next
Earlier today I watched Michael Moore’s latest documentary, Where to Invade Next, not knowing anything about it beforehand. I thought it was his best film to date and his most touchingly human one. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d highly recommend it. Based on the title, it may sound like it’s a movie about war, but the invasion is just a metaphor. It’s really a movie about what the USA can learn from other countries that have achieved strong results in education, lifestyle happiness, drug abuse, women’s rights, and more. I especially resonated with the segment on taking more vacation tim...

Habits and Practices in Your 20s
Your 20s are a powerful decade of your life. During this time you sculpt many of the habits and practices you’ll probably maintain throughout your 30s, 40s, and beyond. However, many 20-somethings don’t give much thought to how their decisions and actions during this decade will ultimately create their future identity. They expect they’ll be able to make changes later, but that assumption usually turns out to be wrong. Career During your 20s you may think of your career path as having many options. You believe you could do many different types of work. That’s technically true. Later in life, however...

Las Vegas Hockey
It’s official that Las Vegas is getting its own NHL hockey team, starting with the 2017-18 season. This will be Las Vegas’ first major league sports team. The team will be formed by pilfering (i.e. drafting) one player from each of the other 30 NHL teams. The games will be played at the new T-Mobile Arena on the Vegas Strip, which can seat about 17,500 people for hockey games. More than 15,000 season tickets have already been sold, so apparently this has been a popular idea. Brain Training and the Placebo Effect
Here’s another article about brain training that popped up in my news feed this morning, about a study finding that any perceived benefits may simply be the placebo effect at work, while the training itself is potentially irrelevant. If you want to learn more about this topic, I’d recommend the book Smarter by Dan Hurley, which is a journalist’s story of delving into brain training programs and sharing the results. I read it last year. Unfortunately he got very little measurable benefit from it, despite months of effort. Note that one brain training company, Lumos Labs (creator of Lumosity), was recently ...

Having Fun in the Pit of Despair
Many spiritual teachers advocate the principle of detachment, which means being unattached to outcomes. The reasoning is that attachment to outcomes creates unnecessary suffering. Life is full of surprises, and if you become overly attached to specific outcomes, you’re likely to create extra stress, frustration, worry, and disappointment for yourself. So why bother with this needless suffering? Dispassionate detachment is a popular idea, especially in Buddhism. It claims to help people transcend neediness and clinginess — if they practice this principle enough. But for many people, it’s impractical to con...

Selecting Projects Wisely
Sometimes people dive into new projects because they really want to make some money or to “get something going.” They put pressure on themselves to start a project mainly for the sake of trying to create some forward momentum. While forward momentum can be a beautiful thing, I would actually recommend against this approach. Usually when I see people try to motivate themselves like this, their projects fizzle out within a matter of months, if they can complete them at all. A couple years later, they have little or nothing to show for their efforts. The “I’ve gotta get something going” appr...

For the upcoming Conscious Life Workshop, the key goal is to help you achieve a sustainable income of $10,000 per month (or more) AND do work you enjoy AND enjoy plenty of lifestyle freedom. Some people wonder about this $10K per month figure. How could it be possible for them, especially when no one in their line of work makes that much money? Since this is a goal I’ve achieved and maintained for many years (and in different fields), let me share some simple realities about earning $10K or more per month. This is basically common sense — certainly not rocket science —  but it’s ...

Social Media, You Got Dumped
After careful consideration I’ve decided to opt out of participating in external social media sites. I no longer have active accounts with Twitter, Google+, Facebook, or YouTube. They’ve all been closed, deleted, or otherwise nuked. Yesterday I had tens of thousands of followers on those services. Now I have zero. To opt out even more fully, I’ve also removed all social media recommendation buttons from my website. This de-clutters the site a bit and helps some pages load faster. Why? This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for years and finally decided to take the plunge. It’s not th...

Why I Haven’t Hired a Web Designer
Some people ask me why my website design looks so outdated. One reason is that I’m not much of a web designer myself (being color blind can be a minor obstacle there). The other reason is that the web designers who have approached me haven’t been very good at selling — to me. They try to sell me on features and style changes and giving me good deals. Sometimes they offer to update or modernize my website for free. Then they ask me what I want. What features would I like to see? What other sites have a look I’d like to model? And immediately I know this isn’t someone I’d want to...

Why I’m Not Recording CLW
Several people have asked about recording or streaming the upcoming Conscious Life Workshop, but I don’t intend to do that. CLW isn’t that kind of event. It’s going to be way too interactive, and the transformational value is experiential. To watch a recording would be like trying to learn how to drive a car by watching videos of people learning to drive. You might learn some minor details that way, but you still won’t know how to drive. Watching other people go through the experience isn’t the point. The point is for you to have the experience. Making money without a job is a learna...

What’s Your Favorite Way to Earn Money?
One thing that a lot of employee-minded people suffer from is opportunity blindness. They’re surrounded by fun and expansive ways to earn plenty of money, but they have a hard time seeing those opportunities. They’ve been socially conditioned to think that getting a job is the one and only way to earn money for them. They complain about a lack of opportunities. But the reality is that they’re blinded by their own limiting beliefs and an inflexible attitude. Earning money from a straight salary is just one of many ways to generate income. There are many others though. Here are some ways I’ve earned i...
