Are antivaccine groups “ hate groups ” ? Not exactly, but the answer isn ’ t entirely no, either.
Recently, Dr. Peter Hotez characterized antivaccine groups as "hate groups," and antivaxer Barbara Loe Fisher took great umbrage, accusing Dr. Hotez and the public health community of "bullying" parents of "vaccine-injured" children. Did Dr. Hotez go too far? And what about Fisher's hypocrisy, given that Dr. Hotez has received death threats credible enough to warrant police protection and Fisher herself has sued her critics, in effect trying to bully them into silence? A bad week for homeopathy is a good week for science
It's been a bad week for homeopathy. First, the NHS in the UK has stopped funding homeopathy in London. Then, news stories appeared about research fraud and a retracted clinical trial of homeopathy for cancer in which the investigators had already been arrested. So sad! Antonietta Gatti and Stefano Montanari: A strange antivaccine conspiracy theory from Italy
A year ago, I wrote about some bad science from Italy from Stefano Montanari and Antonietta Gatti, in which an electron microscope was used and abused to claim that vaccines are contaminated with horrific "nanoparticles." A year later, Gatti and Montanari's homes, labs, and offices were raided and their computers seized in an investigation. Not surprisingly, the antivaccine movement has spun a conspiracy theory out of the raid. The real explanation is likely to be much less sinister. The cruel sham that is “ right-to-try ” will be up for a vote in the House tomorrow
It's finally happened. A "right-to-try" bill is coming up for a vote in the House of Representatives. It's been slightly modified from the version that passed the Senate last year to make it less patient-hostile, but it's still the same cruel sham that right-to-try has always been. Dr. Paul Thomas: A rising star in the antivaccine movement
For credibility, the antivaccine movement needs antivaccine pediatricians, such as Dr. Jay Gordon and Dr. Bob Sears. Meet the pediatrician who is the latest rising star in the antivaccine movement, Dr. Paul Thomas. He even claims to have his very own "vaxed vs. unvaxed" study. Yet more evidence that the antivaccine trope of “ too many too soon ” is nonsense
One of the most persuasive antivaccine talking points to parents tends to be the claim that babies are getting "too many too soon." While a grant deadline distracts Orac, create your own Insolence! Open thread time!
For the last few days, real life concerns over keeping his lab funded have shockingly interfered with Orac's blogging. Being the benevolent blogmaster that he is, Orac has decided to open the floodgates with an open thread. Create your own Insolence. And, hey, let's be careful out there. In the online echo chamber promoting alternative medicine, there are varying degrees of deception. Idaho: The capital of the US for religion-inspired medical neglect of children, thanks to the Followers of Christ
In the US, there is an unfortunate attitude that the parents own their children. When the parents are religious zealots belonging to a church like the Followers of Christ, which believes in prayer instead of medicine, the results are tragic. Unfortunately, we as a society value religious freedom more than children. Quackademic medicine versus being “ science-based ”
A couple of weeks ago, I was interviewed by the a reporter from the Georgetown student newsletter about its integrative medicine program. It got me to thinking how delusion that one’s work is science-based can lead to collaborations with New Age “quantum” mystics like Deepak Chopra. "Integrative medicine" doctors engaging in what I like to refer to as quackademic medicine all claim to be "evidence-based" or "science-based." The words apparently do not mean what integrative medicine academics think they mean. The post Quackademic medicine versus being “science-based” appeared first on RESPECTFUL INSOLENCE....

Parents are still feeding their children bleach to “ cure ” their autism
Nearly six years ago, I learned of parents who treated their children's autism by feeding them "Miracle Mineral Solution"—or even giving it to them in enemas. It turns out that MMS is a strong bleach. I had thought this cult of bleaching away autism had gone away. I was wrong. Incredibly, parents are still giving their children bleach enemas and tearing up their colons.
