Reverse Aging with Resveratrol
It’s true that if you lead a Grain Brain-friendly lifestyle, you can’t crack open a cold beer (even the gluten-free kind). However, that doesn’t mean all alcohol is off-limits. In fact, you can, and I do, enjoy the occasional glass of red wine. The reason for this? Not just because it tastes great and pairs well with all that grass-fed beef you’ll be eating, but because it’s an incredibly rich source of resveratrol, a natural compound found in grapes. Resveratrol has delivered a reputation for being able to deliver a whole host of benefits to our body, ranging from promoting heart health to boosting blood flow to...

Three weeks ago, a friend of mine, who has IBS, told me to eliminate flour and sugar after I told her about my symptoms of painful, achy feet, ankles and knees. In addition, I was experiencing migraines every other day, regular fatigue, and persistent brain fog! Three weeks in, after cutting gluten and sugar from my diet, I exhibit none of those symptoms at all! I have only had two headaches in the past three weeks and my energy levels are at an all-time high! -Jackie U. The post Jackie U. appeared first on David Perlmutter M.D.. Why We Shouldn’t Focus on Developing Alzheimer’s Treatments
Recently, The New York Times announced the creation of a partnership between the National Institutes of Health, 10 pharmaceutical companies and seven nonprofit organizations dedicated to the development of drugs to treat, among other things, Alzheimer’s disease. While at first blush, this five-year, $230 million effort may seem noble, the ultimate motivation for this seemingly ecumenical event is suspect. Alzheimer’s disease affects some 5.4 million Americans, and according to a recent report from the RAND Corporation, costs Americans in the neighborhood of $200 billion each year to care for those afflicted. To context...

Dangerous Meat and Dairy?
This study that caught so much attention in media doesn’t reflect in any way the health benefits of food choices like grass-fed beef and dairy products derived from organically raised cows. But leave it to those who write the headlines to draw simplified and biased conclusions with the intent to draw attention to their publications. It boggles the mind that a study such as this would dare to imply that the foods we have eaten for well over a million years are now scientifically determined to be unhealthful. If that were the case, how would we have made it this far? The important message revealed by the report was not art...

Patrick L.
Patrick’s “a-ha” moment is just great. Did any of you have a similar moment? – Dr. Perlmutter While reading Grain Brain, I had my “a-ha” moment in chapter 3. I immediately dumped out my sugar-filled coffee and poured a fresh black cup. In that moment, I swore off sugar and gluten completely. I focused solely on protein, healthy fats, and vegetables. In just the last four weeks I have lost six pounds. It’s been only thirty days and I feel completely different! My gas problem has disappeared, and I wake up refreshed and energized, rather than with a feeling of sickness. I have a new...

Ayla
The best part about Ayla’s story is how she finally learned that eating fat does NOT make you fat, a message I’ve working hard to spread. – Dr. Perlmutter I can personally attest to the drastic affects one experiences after removing wheat, grains and added sugar from her diet. I have lost 68 pounds (the first 55 pounds dropped within 6 months without exercise…simply from eliminating those 3 categories). More important though, is that most of my adult life I have been plagued by ridiculously high triglycerides.  When I first began reading Wheat Belly, my triglycerides were 546. On my lab results p...

Dairy: Dangerous or Delightful?
I’ve seen a lot of chatter here about the role of dairy in a Grain Brain lifestyle. Is it okay? How much can we have? What about Product X? Certainly, there is a role for dairy in the Grain Brain diet. However, that said, it is not a dairy-heavy lifestyle. Want a splash of whole milk or cream in your coffee? Go for it! A piece of organic goat cheese? That’s a-okay as well. Dairy can be enjoyed in moderation. What you want to avoid is low-fat and skim milk/dairy products. The reason for this is that, obviously, low-fat milk has less fat in it, and more lactose sugar. It should come as no surprise to learn that that suga...

Diabetes and Dementia Risk
Over the past several years I have been calling attention to the profound relationship that exists between elevation of blood sugar and risk for developing dementia. This evolving body of knowledge stems from the incontrovertible evidence linking risk for dementia with having diabetes. More compelling is the evidence that demonstrates that this relationship becomes even more dramatic based on the length of time a person has suffered from diabetes. To be sure, I’m talking about type 2 diabetes which now affects about 28.6 million Americans. This is the type of diabetes that, in most people, is directly reflective of dieta...

J.
The path that brought J to a gluten-free, LCHF diet is interesting to learn about. The fact that he is a fellow medical practitioner makes it even more so. – Dr. Perlmutter. I am a physician who has had intermittent diarrhea my entire life as did most of the members of my family. I simply lived with it. However, in my mid-forties, I started developing other symptoms, including inflammatory arthritis of my PIP joints of the hand (negative rheumatologic workup), odd fatigue, and three year’s worth of microscopic hematuria (negative urological workup). I was serum negative for the standard gluten markers and endoscop...

Patricia A.
I had been experiencing puzzling health issues (fatigue, foggy brain, feeling off balance, chills, sweats) on-and-off for three years. A year ago, food intolerances were identified as the culprits. Glucose intolerance and high C-reactive protein were persistent problems. I eliminated gluten (along with other recommended problem foods based on an ALCAT test) from my diet, and, paired with a healthy fats diet, I believe this is responsible for the stark turnaround in my health. I’ve seen a loss of unwanted body fat and an across-the-board improvement in all of my health issues. -Patricia A. The post Patricia A. appeare...

Alzheimer’s: A Disease of the Brain or the Body?
Recently, I had the chance to take part in a conversation with world-renowned experts in the fields of nutrition and neurology as a part of the program “The Agenda with Steve Paikin.” This panel came together to discuss what can be done to protect our brain health as we age. Thanks to the diversity of our backgrounds, there was a wealth of valuable conversation to be had, focusing on how we could further improve brain health. I was able to speak about the tenets of Grain Brain, from exercise to nutrition, and how these all play a role in optimizing the state of our brain. We all came at this topic from a different pers...

Powerful Role of Ketone Fats in Brain Health and Alzheimer’s Treatment
Brain cells function with far greater efficiency when they are utilizing fat (ketones) as a fuel source as opposed to sugar. The exciting news is that scientists are now taking advantage of this finding in the actual treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, as you can see in this recent research publication. This research clearly substantiates the health benefits of a low-carb, high-fat diet as a powerful lifestyle change to achieve the goal of brain health and functionality. While there actually exists a pharmaceutical “medical food” based on the science explained in this report, you can boost the availability of ketones...

Keep Yourself in Ketosis
When talking about a Grain Brain lifestyle, and the very similar ketogenic diet, it’s frequently mentioned that we are aiming to keep our bodies in ketosis. However, if you’re new to my work, it may be that you’re not exactly sure what ketosis is, or why we should be worrying about getting our body into this state. Allow me to explain. Ketones are a special type of fat that can stimulate the pathways that enhance the growth of new neural networks in the brain. A ketogenic diet is one that is high in fats, and this diet has been a tool of researchers for years, used notably in a 2005 study on Parkinson’s patients wh...

Brain and Gut
To all of our readers, As you know, the fundamental premise of my work over the years has been to raise awareness of the relationship between nutrition and digestion, and how they support brain health and function. In my presentations to professionals, as well as my publications, I have endeavored to incorporate the most up-to-date research from around the world showing relevance to this thesis. And while there are journals dealing with brain science that may feature research dealing with nutrition, as well as nutritional and digestive publications that, on occasion, describe the role of nutrition in brain health, there is...

Lori R.
It’s so good to hear stories like Lori’s, about how Grain Brain has brought answers and hope to those who have spent so many years looking for both. – Dr. Perlmutter My husband and I were in a weather-related car accident in January 2000 and both experienced severe closed head trauma. We lived in Pennsylvania at the time. By the grace of God, we recovered miraculously – although quickly realized (and accepted) that the damage done to our brains was going result in life-long implications for us. We made the decision to start a family a few years ago and have my husband be a stay-at-home dad; in part be...
