Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Specific Types of Help
This is the final article in a series about social determinants of health (SDoH). Previous articles covered the definition, collection, sharing, and use of SDoH. I’ll finish with a look at some specific areas of intervention.
We’ve seen the importance of personal interventions, through interviews and evaluating SDoH, to solve problems. In rural areas, where it might be daunting either to travel to a doctor or to schedule an online visit with poor Internet access, home visits fill the gap. Conduit Health Partners is one organization that does so. A patient can speak to a nurse immediately—as opposed to calling...

How Healthcare Communication Platforms Can Harness Generative AI in a HIPAA-Compliant Way
The following is a guest article by Nate MacLeitch, Founder and CEO at QuickBlox
The demand for AI-powered Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) in healthcare is evident: 75% of executives believe that generative AI has reached a stage where it is poised to reshape the healthcare industry.
When the sector is set to face shortages of between 37,800 and 124,000 physicians by 2034, generative AI could alleviate administrative work, such as summarizing patient calls and managing electronic health records (EHRs), to allow medical staff to focus on improving patient care. Yet, privacy laws and a fragmented market have kep...

Driving Patient Behavior and Connecting Patients with Their Care Teams
According to Rich Steinle, CEO of Carium, many healthcare organizations haven’t created a culture of “my health is every day” even though many of the DIY approaches to health like wearables are being fully embraced by patients. This type of proactive monitoring of their health indicates that patients want to be more engaged and involved in their care. In fact, trends like these indicate that patients want to shift away from the model of care where care is confined to the four walls of a clinic or hospital. Instead, they want to use advanced virtual care technologies that can support their health on ...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Acting on SDoH
Previous articles in this series introduced the importance of social determinants of health (SDoH) and explained how it can be captured and classified. In this article, I’ll show how many hospitals, payers, and other institutions are acting on that data.
Of course, the staff of a clinic or hospital don’t go around looking for apartments the way they actively look for a long-term care facility. Instead, their case managers partner with community institutions to help patients. But the clinic or hospital is a crucial linchpin in connecting the patient to this help. According to Dr. Victor Lee, vice president of cl...

Finding a Health Equity Partner for Language Services
The following is a guest article by Merrie Wallace, Chief Revenue Officer at Boostlingo
In today’s healthcare landscape, the shift to value-based care and expanding requirements from the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) have magnified the importance of language access. As patient outcomes have become the focus in an increasingly diverse patient population, interpretation becomes essential for driving improvements in care for limited English proficiency (LEP) patients. There has been a growing need for on-demand services and increased outsourcing to meet them, with many organizations turning to external vendors to fill t...

How Do You See Health Data Utilities Evolving? Where are We Today and Where is it Heading?
Health data utility is still a fairly new concept in the world of healthcare. But as we talk about it, more and more HIE organizations have started to use it and the concept has been embraced by many. This naturally made it a hot topic at the recent Civitas Conference. We gathered up some of our brilliant members of the Healthcare IT Today Community to get their perspective. How are health data utilities evolving? Where are we now with it and where do we see it heading? We’ve compiled their answers in this video below!

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Collecting Data
This article shows how organizations are collecting it.
Andrew Eye, CEO of the healthcare data science company ClosedLoop, estimates that about 15% of physicians collect SDoH-related data from patients and use it to assess their needs. The percentage is much higher in some areas.
Data can be spotty, according to Eye, who says for instance that data from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) often lacks racial identifications.
He also says that collecting and processing the data is labor-intensive, because it can be hard to persuade patients to talk openly about financial and logistical problems. At the institu...

How Healthcare Organizations Can Reduce Risk with Zero Trust
The following is a guest article by Peter Newton, Senior Director of Products and Solutions at Fortinet
Personal medical and financial data is incredibly valuable, which is why healthcare organizations are high-value targets for cybercriminals. The most common way attackers infiltrate networks is by stealing user credentials, making identity and access management absolutely critical for the medical industry.
Zero-trust security strategies have emerged as a strong way to reduce the risk of a data breach. Traditionally, network security has assumed that once a user has logged in to the network, they are safe to access any an...

TPGi Enables Healthcare Teams to Empower All Patients with Digital Accessibility
We’ve all been there: you arrive at a healthcare provider for an appointment, and there’s no one available at the check-in area. You might just see a kiosk to check in. Imagine, now, how frustrated you’d feel if that kiosk was out of order. Or its software is frozen.
For people with disabilities, any healthcare kiosk that isn’t fully digitally accessible may as well be out of order every single time.
TPGi’s Business Development VP Matt Ater is blind, and he says patients like him face this problem regularly. Patients may be blind or have low vision. They may have problems clicking buttons because of coordinatio...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Defining and Sharing
This article delves deeper into various aspects of data handling, and who is working in these fields.
Defining SDoH
Lyd Paull-Flores, senior director, healthcare at GCOM, summarizes the social determinants of health in an article:
Economic stability
Economic access and quality
Social community and context
Healthcare access and quality
Neighborhood and built environment
A few different organizations have undertaken to categorize SDoH. The most comprehensive initiative, cited by several of my interviewees, is the Gravity project. Dr. Marc Rabner, chief medical officer of the nonprofit CRISP Shared Services (CSS), is on t...

Why Generative AI in Healthcare Requires a Focus on Caregivers and Patients
The following is a guest article by Tina Manoharan, Global Lead of Data Science & AI at Philips
“Don’t overwhelm me with more data. Help me get more value out of the data I already have.”
This feedback from a physician has stuck with me ever since I gave one of my first public presentations on the opportunities of AI and big data in healthcare, many years ago. Today, with the groundswell of interest in generative AI, it’s a message that seems more pertinent than ever.
Much has already been written about how generative AI can boost healthcare innovation, in times when healthcare professionals are under more ...
