We are at an exciting time in the world of healthcare! With technology becoming more accessible and more and more digital natives entering the work force, there’s an abundance of innovation. We have so many more people that are coming up with creative digital solutions to the challenges that we are currently facing. However, while there are plenty of great ideas and startups, there’s just simply not enough money to fund all of them.

Knowing Your Patient: Helping Healthcare Organizations Prevent Insurance Fraud
The following is a guest article by Bala Kumar, Chief Product Officer at Jumio
The list of responsibilities for a CISO in healthcare is constantly growing. Today’s threat landscape requires them to plan for ransomware and malware attacks, protect against traditional vulnerabilities in legacy equipment, and mitigate the risk of internal threats.
With those competing priorities, fraud prevention does not always make its way to the top of the list of considerations, even when it should. According to the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association, fraud costs the U.S. healthcare industry more than $50 billion each year. ...

A Data Network to Tackle Real-Time Eligibility and Claims Along with Many Other Health Data Problems
Two of the biggest billing problems in U.S. healthcare involve coverage, eligibility and claims. First of all, will the insurer pay for the treatment the doctor requests? Second, how much is covered and how much does the patient have to pay out-of-pocket?
Avaneer Health, a company created by a consortium of major payers and health care providers, is trying to solve these problems and other administrative inefficiencies once and for all. Moreover, the network and platform they have created can solve many of the data sharing issues in healthcare because you connect once to the network and you’re plugged in to the entire ne...

Do You Understand the Quality of Your Data and the Value Clean Data Can Provide?
We live in a messy world (and a biased one), so hardly any organization can claim to have data as accurate as they want. According to Mike Noshay, Founder and Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at Verinovum, provenance is “supreme.” In other words, the way to good data is to know how it was collected, who collected it, when events happened and were recorded, and so on.
Health care organizations need to know their data, but they also need to know their objectives. The types and amount of data cleansing they need depends on how they’ll use the data: to track high-risk patients, measure quality, etc.
Nosha...

Healthcare Cybersecurity Is Difficult to Maintain, How a Security Operations Center Can Help
Conclusion
Healthcare has topped the list of most breached industries for the past 12 years — a dubious distinction. While hospitals and health systems are taking cybersecurity more seriously, the type of breaches and their severity continue to increase, as evidenced by the large rise in hacking incidents.
An in-house or outsourced security operations center can help level the playing field for hospitals through a total environment approach designed to detect and remediate threats before they cause hospital systems to crash and patient care to be impacted. (Source: EMR and HIPAA)

Healthcare Has A Data Resolution Problem
According to Charlie Harp, CEO of Clinical Architecture, even if we solve the interoperability challenge in healthcare, we will still have to work to refine the data to make it useful. The quality of that data needs to be improved and the resolution of the picture it paints of a patient needs to increase. The latter is a hidden challenge that healthcare organizations are not paying enough attention to.
Healthcare IT Today sat down with Charlie Harp at HIMSS23 to unpack healthcare’s data resolution challenge.
Data Resolution

ChatGPT Misses the Mark in Healthcare – What It Needs to Succeed
The following is a guest article by Michael Blum, MD, Cardiologist, Co-founder and CEO at BeeKeeperAI and Former Chief Medical Information Officer at UCSF Medical Center
The advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT3 (GPT3) Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot sparked an unprecedented societal appreciation for the power of AI. While AI has been broadly deployed across industries for a decade, it remained mostly hidden from the typical user. The release of GPT3 in late 2022 changed all of that.
Suddenly, a user with minimal computer literacy and no programming or data science training whatsoever could ask an AI-based applicati...
