Study Identifies Lower-Cost Way To Predict Health Crises Post-Discharge
New research has identified an approach to patient monitoring that can be put into place at a relatively low cost after providers discontinue more resource-intensive telehealth programs post-discharge. The paper providing the results of the study, which appears in JMIR Medical Informatics, notes that most existing hospital telehealth programs monitor patients post-discharge for 30 to […] (Source: EMR and HIPAA)

Healthcare Cloud Storage Humor – Fun Friday
As we head into the holiday weekend, it's time for a little Fun Friday. For those of you whose heads are in the holiday clouds like me, you might appreciate this great cloud storage cartoon. The sad thing is that there are still a lot of healthcare executives that think that this isn't far from the cloud. There is still a lot of fear around cloud that's unfortunate. I'd describe it as fear of something they don't fully understand. It's going to take some work to educate them so they feel comfortable with the cloud. The reality is that the cloud is in all of our futures. (Source: EMR and HIPAA)

In prior years, one of the driving assumptions behind population health management technology was that it was important to focus on high-risk patients. The idea has been that fending off costly emergencies among these patients was the best way to control costs. But if one market research report is on target, the practice of PHM may be evolving. California ’s Information Privacy for Connected Devices Law is a Good Start, But Doesn’t Apply to Healthcare
The following is a guest blog post by Mike Nelson, Vice President of IoT Security, DigiCert. As the nation’s most populous state, California often serves as an incubator for national legislative and regulatory policy, and it’s great to see them take a leadership position in IoT cybersecurity. The new law will require manufacturers of connected devices to produce them with “reasonable” security features. However, this law specifically excludes healthcare IoT devices. The Difficult Healthcare Problems Lie at the Crossroads
Sometimes you stumble upon a quote which captures healthcare so perfectly. That’s what I felt when I heard this quote from Jonathan Sheldon at Oracle. The real difficult problems sit at the crossroads of multiple domains – requires you to integrate data from separate domains. -Jonathan Sheldon, Oracle While many like to talk about the healthcare market, I’ve always felt that was a false framework. There’s no one healthcare market. At least not in the US. The world of healthcare is made up of hundreds of markets that have some overlaps and need to work together, but each market is very different. The...

Battling the Barriers in EP/Cath Labs
The following is a guest blog post by Tom Downes, CEO of Quail Digital. Clear and unambiguous communication between team members is an essential component of any surgical environment. It’s particularly important – and indeed particularly challenging – in cath labs and electrophysiology (EP) labs where physicians and clinical staff in interventional cardiovascular and other minimally-invasive therapeutics are typically spread across multiple rooms and physically separated by lead-lined doors. But as patient demand continues to rapidly grow, the inherent complexities of the surgical environment are pre...

Let ’ s Keep Genetic Information an Individual Affair
These times train us to seek continually for more data and more transparency, always assuming that more is better. But some types of data and transparency bring risks, because “A little learning is a dangerous thing.” In particular, sharing genetic information with family members raises daunting ethical issues, along with the need for a mature understanding of consequences, as illustrated by a court case from the UK recently reported in The Guardian. Providers Tell KLAS That Existing EMRs Can ’t Handle Genomic Medicine
Providers are still in the early stages of applying genomics to patient care. However, at least among providers that can afford the investment, clinical genomics programs are beginning to become far more common, and as a result, we’re beginning to get a sense of what’s involved. Apparently, one of those things might be creating a new IT infrastructure which bypasses the provider’s existing EMR to support genomics data management. KLAS recently spoke with a number of providers about the vendors and technologies they were using to implement precision medicine. Along the way, they were able to gather so...

Healthcare Interoperability is a Joke
Did you see the big news last month about healthcare interoperability? That’s right, Carequality announced support for FHIR. A rigorous look at organizational processes, perhaps bolstered by new technology, can produce big savings in almost any industry. A bad process, according to Robbie Hughes, Founder and CEO for Lumeon, can be described as, “The wrong people have the wrong information at the wrong time.” One example is a surgery unit that Lumeon worked with on scheduling surgeries. During the frenzy that was healthcare organizations rushing to implement EHRs and chase government money, it was amazing to see so many other projects get left behind. One of the biggest areas that got left behind was investments in IT infrastructure. All the budget was going to the EHR and so the infrastructure budgets often got cut. There were some exceptions where upgrades to infrastructure were needed to make the EHR work, but most organizations I know chose to limp along with their current infrastructure and used that money to pay for the EHR. Given this background, I was quite intrigued by the recent announcement of ...

Value Based Care: Successes, Challenges, and Changes – #HITsm Chat Topic
We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 11/16 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Matt Fisher (@Matt_R_Fisher) on the topic of “Value Based Care: Successes, Challenges, and Changes”. The transition of the healthcare industry from fee for service to value based care (or alternative payment methodologies) garners significant attention from regulators, providers, vendors and many others in the industry. To frame the discussion, value based care generally refers to payment for quality, or in other words trying to f...

Transition to Value-Based Payments Top Concern for Long-Term and Post-Acute Care
On 1 October 2019, CMS will flip from a volume-based reimbursement model for Long-Term & Post-Acute Care Organizations (LTPAC) to a value-based one. This looming transformation was the top concern for most of the 2,000 attendees at PointClickCare’s annual user conference – #PCCSummit18. PointClickCare makes a cloud-based EHR platform for LTPAC and HomeCare Organizations. According to the company, 60% of all Senior Living and Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) in North America use their platform. Each year, PointClickCare hosts a user conference, called PCCSummit, where customers gather to get a preview of ne...

Conference on Drug Pricing Inject New Statistics Into Debate, Few New Insights (Part 2 of 2)
The first part of this article described the upward pressures on costs and some of the philosophical debates over remedies. This section continues the discussion with several different angles on costs. Universal access and innovation It’s easy to call health care a human right. But consider an analogy: housing could also be considered a human right, yet no one has the right to a twenty-room mansion. Modern drug and genetic research are creating the equivalents of many twenty-room mansions, and taking up residence means the difference between life and death for someone, or perhaps between a long productive life and on...

Conference on Drug Pricing Injects New Statistics Into Debate, Few New Insights (Part 1 of 2)
The price of medications has become a leading social issue, distorting economies around the world and providing easy talking points to politicians of all parties (not that they know how to solve the problem). Last week I attended a conference on the topic at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School. On one level, the increasing role that drugs play in health care is salutary. Wouldn’t you rather swallow a pill than go in for surgery, with the attendant risks of anesthesia, postoperative pain opiates, and exposure to the increasingly scary bacteria that lurk in h...

Combatting Communication Problems in Community Healthcare Clinics
Conclusion Community healthcare clinics are evolving and there is now a growing need to implement digital solutions to provide staff with the ability to hear everything clearly, at all times. There are also other daily practices that can help facilitate a more tranquil environment. Along with headset technology, eliminating unnecessary, frantic noise across the clinic will drastically reduce the distractions all doctors, nurses and receptionists have to face. Not only will this have a positive impact on stress-levels, but it will also make it a lot easier to communicate effectively amongst the team. Daily team meetings are...

AI in Healthcare – #HITsm Chat Topic
We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 11/9 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Jon White @technursejon on the topic of “AI in Healthcare”. The idea of Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn’t new. We’ve seen robots and intelligent computers in film and on television for decades, and read about them in science fiction novels for even longer. As the processing power of computers and computing devices has taken off, and more and more data is captured from all facets of our lives, the science fiction from o...
