Magnitude of Thrombocytopenia and Associated Factors among Pregnant Women Attending the Antenatal Care Service Unit of Wachemo University Nigist Ellen Mohammed Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Hosanna, Southern Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: The magnitude of thrombocytopenia in this study was 14.8%. Rural residence, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and anemia were significantly associated with thrombocytopenia. Therefore, the platelet count should be routinely determined during antenatal care visits for proper diagnosis and to minimize bleeding during and/or after childbirth.PMID:38655566 | PMC:PMC11039013 | DOI:10.1155/2024/8163447 (Source: Advances in Hematology)

Development and validation of a clinical prediction model for prognostic factors in patients with primary pontine hemorrhage
Braz J Med Biol Res. 2024 Apr 19;57:e13359. doi: 10.1590/1414-431X2024e13359. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTWe aimed to develop a prognostic model for primary pontine hemorrhage (PPH) patients and validate the predictive value of the model for a good prognosis at 90 days. A total of 254 PPH patients were included for screening of the independent predictors of prognosis, and data were analyzed by univariate and multivariable logistic regression tests. The cases were then divided into training cohort (n=219) and validation cohort (n=35) based on the two centers. A nomogram was developed using independent predictors from the train...

GSE247433 MiR-146a alleviates inflammatory bowel disease in mice through systematical regulation of multiple genetic networks
Contributors : Fengting Zhu ; Taotan Yang ; Changgeng PengSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a multiple-genes-involved chronic disease and current available targeted drugs for IBD only deliver moderate efficacy. Whether there is a single gene that systematically regulates IBD is not yet known. Here we showed that the expression of miR-146a in colon was elevated in Dextran Sulfate Sodium Salt (DSS)-induced IBD mice and patients with IBD. DSS induced dramatic body weight loss and much more rectal bleeding, shorter colon length and coli...

The relationship between posttonsillectomy bleeding to hemogram and coagulation parameters
ConclusionsAge, high WBC and neutrophil levels were determined as possible risk factors for PTB. Seasonal and gender distribution, aPTT and INR values were similar in the two groups. In order to prevent and predict bleeding, detailed infection investigation should be performed and the risk of bleeding should be considered to increase with increasing age. Comparison Between Intraoperative Target Area CementEnhanced Percutaneous Vertebroplasty and Conventional Percutaneous Vertebroplasty for Osteoporotic Thoracolumbar Non-Total Vertebral Fractures
CONCLUSION: Target area cement-enhanced PVP can effectively relieve short-term pain and functional disability and reduce the long-term possibility of secondary collapse. Therefore, it is a technically feasible and efficacious method for the treatment of osteoporotic thoracolumbar non-total vertebral fractures.PMID:38650561 | DOI:10.5137/1019-5149.JTN.43749-23.2 (Source: Turkish Neurosurgery)

Systematic review of treatment for unruptured intracranial aneurysms: clipping vs coiling
CONCLUSION: The study showed that coiling was associated with a lower occlusion rate, shorter hospital stay, lower bleeding risk, and lower short-term mortality and morbidity compared to clipping. In terms of ischemia risk, 1 year mortality and morbidity, coiling and clipping bear similar risk. We suppose that clipping may have a better outcome than coiling in the long term especially for young patients. Further research is needed to confirm our conclusion.PMID:38650551 | DOI:10.5137/1019-5149.JTN.23729-18.1 (Source: Turkish Neurosurgery)

Selective binding of cationic fibrinogen-mimicking chitosan nanoparticles to activated platelets and efficient drug release for antithrombotic therapy
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 21:131742. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131742. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThrombosis is the main cause of catastrophic events including ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) therapy offers a desirable approach to antithrombosis through a reduction of platelet reactivity. However, major bleeding complications, severe off-target side effects, and resistance or nonresponse to ASA greatly attenuate its clinical outcomes. Herein, we report a cationic fibrinogen-mimicking nanoparticle, denoted as ASA-RGD-CS@TPP, to achieve activated-platelet-ta...

Cost-Effectiveness of Recombinant Factor  IX Fc Prophylaxis and Recombinant Factor IX On-Demand Treatment in Patients with Haemophilia B Without Inhibitors
CONCLUSIONS: rFIXFc prophylaxis provides improved health outcomes and lower costs, and represents a cost-effective treatment option compared with rFIX on-demand for adolescent and adult male patients with haemophilia B. This comparative assessment of cost-effectiveness should help to inform both clinicians and healthcare policy makers when making treatment decisions for patients with haemophilia B.PMID:38652439 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-024-02841-w (Source: Adv Data)

Diagnostic and therapeutic use of oral micronized progesterone in endocrinology
Rev Endocr Metab Disord. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1007/s11154-024-09882-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProgesterone is a natural steroid hormone, while progestins are synthetic molecules. In the female reproductive system, progesterone contributes to the control of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone secretion and their pulsatility, via its receptors on the kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin neurons in the hypothalamus. Progesterone together with estradiol controls the cyclic changes of proliferation and decidualization of the endometrium; exerts anti-mitogenic actions on endometrial epithelial cells; r...

Buttressed pancreaticogastrostomy for a soft pancreas and/or small pancreatic duct in pancreaticoduodenectomy: A retrospective cohort study
ConclusionButtressing PG represents a simple and safe reconstruction technique following PD, particularly for patients with a soft pancreas and/or small pancreatic duct. This approach is associated with a low incidence of POPF. However, prospective randomised trials with large sample sizes are required to confirm these results. (Source: Surgical Practice)
