NIH Director's Seminar Series: Development of targeted and immune-based therapies for urothelial carcinomas and rare genitourinary tumors
Dr. Apolo ’ s work has focused on the development of targeted therapies, with a focus on angiogenesis, MET inhibitors, and immunotherapies for the treatment of urothelial cancer and rare genitourinary tumors, and to further our understanding of the pathways driving these diseases. She has investigated the patterns of oncogenic tyrosine-kinase pathway-related alterations in bladder cancer for targeted therapy approaches and has demonstrated the innate and adaptive immunomodulatory properties of cabozantinib. From these mechanisms, she has conducted pioneering research into novel therapies for bladder, kidney, and rare gen...

The Case for BK Polyomavirus as a Cause of Bladder Cancer
NCI ’ s Center for Cancer Research (CCR) Grand Rounds Dr. Buck ’ s lab studies polyomaviruses. A great majority of healthy adults chronically shed polyomavirus virions in their urine and from the surface of their skin. Although these lifelong infections generally aren't known to cause symptoms in healthy individuals, under conditions of immune impairment polyomaviruses can cause disease. For example, BK polyomavirus (BKV) causes kidney and bladder damage in organ transplant patients, while its close relative JCV causes a lethal brain disease in patients on immunosuppressive therapies and in individuals suffering from ...
