Potential Interaction between Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate and Prescription Drugs in Artificial Intestinal Juice
This study evaluated the interaction between sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) and several commonly used concomitant drugs, such as carvedilol, bisoprolol, imidapril, atorvastatin and azilsartan. The residual rate of adsorption 6 h after starting the experiment followed the order carvedilol (0.36%) < bisoprolol (19.7%) < imidapril (81.2%) < atorvastatin (86.5%) < azilsartan (87.9%) in artificial intestinal juice (pH 6.8). In addition, the pKa of carvedilol and bisoprolol was 8.0 and 9.6 and that of atorvastatin, azilsartan, and imidapril was 4.5, 6.1, and 2.4, respectively. These results indicate that the form...

Ivabradine as a treatment option for junctional ectopic tachycardia in an adult female
AbstractA Junctional ectopic tachycardia diagnosis was performed using two electrophysiological maneuvers in an adult female with a narrow-complex supraventricular tachycardia with a bystander AV-node slow pathway conduction, who previously underwent catheter ablation attempts for an atrio-ventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia misdiagnosis. The first maneuver was atrial entrainment with an atrial-His-His-atrial response. The second was based on the response to a premature atrial complex delivered at different phases of the tachycardia cycle confirming that anterograde slow pathway conduction and retrograde fast pathway ...

Quiz case: a clinical reasoning challenge in the emergency stroke setting
AbstractA right-handed woman in her 80s was admitted to the emergency department 1 h after sudden-onset global aphasia and right-sided hemiparesis. Medical history included arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, aortic stenosis, osteoporosis, and recent pulmonary embolism. Medication consisted of apixaban, bisoprolol, hydrochlorothiazide, allopurinol, fenofibrate, and vitamin D. Vital parameters (blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation) and glycemia were all within normal range. Electrocardiogram showed a first-degree atrioventricular block. The patient was promptly transported to the e...
