Predictors of low ‐voltage zones in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation eligible for catheter ablation: An observational study
ConclusionApproximately 25% of the patients with persistent AF had LVZs. Advanced age, female sex, CAD, and a larger LA were independent predictors for LVZs with the model demonstrating a very good AUC for the ROC curve. These findings hold the potential to be used to tailor the ablation procedure for the individual patient. (Source: Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology)

A High Precision, Wide Dynamic Range Closed-Loop Neuromodulation IC With Rapid Stimulation Artifact Recovery
This article presents a high precision, wide dynamic range (DR) closed-loop neuromodulation (CLNM) system that can completely reject stimulation artifacts (SA) and achieve rapid SA recovery. In the recorder, a novel SA quick-blanking scheme is proposed for rail-to-rail SA rejection while minimizing SA recovery time. Besides, a new analog front-end (AFE) architecture based on a frequency-shaping (FS) technique is developed to extend DR intrinsically. In the stimulator, a stimulation driver implemented with a proposed redundant crossfire (RXF) technique is incorporated to improve the effective resolution of the stimulation c...

Accurate Detection of Lead Malfunction From ECG-derived Bipolar Pacing Stimulus Amplitude
One common mode of lead failure is insulation breach which may result in myopotential noise and device malfunction. “Pseudo-unipolarization” of bipolar pacing stimuli, as observed from a routine 12-lead ECG due to stimulus current leak has been observed with insulation breaches. Type of cycle, temperament and childhood trauma are associated with lithium response in patients with bipolar disorders
Lithium stands as the gold standard in treating bipolar disorders (BD). Despite numerous clinical factors being associated with a favorable response to lithium, comprehensive studies examining the collective i... (Source: International Journal of Bipolar Disorders)

Surgical outcomes of endoscopic enucleation of the prostate in community aging males with or without preoperative urinary retention
ConclusionsBoth ThuLEP and B-TUEP were effective in treating BPH-related bladder outlet obstruction. Our study identified more pronounced changes in IPSS total, IPSS voiding, and prostate-specific antigens within the UR group. Moreover, the rate of postoperative UR in this group was not higher than that observed in the non-UR group. Our study also revealed that the presumed benefits of laser surgery in reducing blood loss were less pronounced for patients with UR. (Source: International Urology and Nephrology)

Sex differences in anhedonia in bipolar depression: a resting-state fMRI study
This study aims to explore the regional brain neuroimaging features of BD with anhedonia and the sex differences in these patients. The resting-fMRI by applying fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) method was estimated in 263 patients with BD (174 high anhedonia [HA], 89 low anhedonia [LA]) and 213 healthy controls. The effects of two different factors in patients with BD were analyzed using a 3 (group: HA, LA, HC) × 2 (sex: male, female) ANOVA. The fALFF values were higher in the HA group than in the LA group in the right medial cingulate gyrus and supplementary motor area. For the sex-by-group inter...

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Concurrent with COVID-19 Infection: A Case Report
Turk Psikiyatri Derg. 2024 Spring;35(1):75-77. doi: 10.5080/u27125.ABSTRACTNeuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), which most often occurs after the use of antipsychotics, is a rare but life-threatening condition. In this article, a 56-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of bipolar affective disorder (BPD) who developed NMS after a COVID-19 infection will be presented. The patient had been brought to the emergency room with high fever, fatigue, and slowness of movements that had been going on for two days. The examination revealed tachycardia, tachypnea, lethargy and rigidity. Upon further investigation the COVID-19 test ...

Real-world effectiveness of long-acting injectable vs. oral antipsychotics in patients with bipolar I disorder: a 1-year retrospective observational study
CONCLUSIONS: In real-world data, there is no evidence that LAI antipsychotics (compared to OAP) are superior in the maintenance treatment of BD. These results are important in terms of reflecting clinical practices for the treatment of BD-I. These results do not devalue the use of LAI therapy in BD; however, more studies are needed to identify positive predictors for LAI treatments in BD.PMID:38557295 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2024.2337685 (Source: Current Medical Research and Opinion)
