Bell's mania as a clinical presentation in a neurosurgical setting from a tertiary care neuropsychiatric hospital in India
We present two cases of Bell's mania in a neurosurgical setting. The first case is of a 52-year-old male who presented with holocranial headache, disorientation, and manic symptoms for five months. He was found to have suprasellar craniopharyngioma. He significantly improved with olanzapine, but re-emergence of mood symptoms was noted after surgery. The second case is of a 42-year-old male who presented with a 15-day history of seizures and disorientation. He was found to have a dural arteriovenous fistula. He developed Bell's mania in the post-procedural period, which improved with olanzapine. Compression of the hypothala...

Prenatal insomnia disorder may predict concurrent and postpartum psychopathology: A longitudinal study
J Sleep Res. 2024 Mar 24:e14202. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14202. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile insomnia symptoms may be a risk factor for mental disturbances, few studies evaluated "Insomnia Disorder" and its relationship with perinatal psychopathology. Pregnant women were recruited during their last routine assessment before being hospitalized for delivery during the 3rd trimester at the Gynaecological Unit of the University Hospital of Ferrara and Udine, Italy, from January 2022 to January 2023. Our assessment included baseline evaluation (T0), and evaluations at 1 month (T1) and 3 months (T2) in the postpartum period, wit...

Early experience with the new DORA daridorexant in patients with insomnia disorder and comorbid mental disturbances: Results of a naturalistic study with 3  months follow-up
J Sleep Res. 2024 Mar 24:e14196. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14196. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInsomnia disorder may affect mental health, increasing suicidal risk. Targeting insomnia is crucial in the clinical practice. Sixty-six consecutive patients with insomnia disorder according with the DSM-5-TR criteria were treated with the dual orexin receptor antagonist, daridorexant 50 mg. Baseline (T0), 1 month (T1) and 3 month (T2) evaluations were performed. Insomnia severity (Insomnia Severity Index), mood, anxiety symptoms and suicidal risk (Beck Depression Inventory-II, Young Mania Rating Scale, Self-Reported Anxiety Scale, Suicid...

New pharmacotherapies to tackle the unmet needs in bipolar disorder: a focus on acute suicidality
Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2024 Mar 22. doi: 10.1080/14656566.2024.2334425. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Suicidal behavior is relatively frequent in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and constitutes their most frequent cause of death. Suicide rates remain high in patients with BD despite adherence to guidelines recommending lithium as first line, and/or antidepressants, antipsychotics, psychotherapy, psychosocial interventions, and electroconvulsive therapy. Hence the need to identify more effective and rapid anti-suicide interventions.AREAS COVERED: To tackle the unmet needs of pharmacotherapy, we investig...
