Environmental researchers are developing new biosensors for testing water
Biologists are part of an interdisciplinary team which has developed novel biosensors that enable pharmaceutical products to be detected more effectively in water. These sensors can measure two types of pharmaceutical substances – beta-blockers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – in real-time and in low concentrations. Labetalol in acute cocaine toxicity: is it safe?
3 out of 5 stars Acute Toxicity from Topical Cocaine for Epistaxis: Treatment with Labetalol. Richards JR et al. J Emerg Med 2017 Mar;52:311-313. Abstract There has long been a debate among toxicologists — still unresolved — as to whether it is safe to use a beta-blocker to treat cocaine-related hypertension and tachycardia. The (theoretical) concern is that since cocaine is both an α- and a β-agonist, blocking the β-receptors could lead to unopposed α stimulation with increased severe hypertension. Some authors contend that in this setting, labetalol would be safe since it blocks both α and β receptors.  Oth...

An analysis of beta-blocker administration pre-and post-traumatic brain injury with subanalyses for head injury severity and myocardial injury - Edavettal M, Gross BW, Rittenhouse K, Alzate J, Rogers A, Estrella L, Miller JA, Rogers FB.
A growing body of literature indicates that beta-blocker administration after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is cerebroprotective, limiting secondary injury; however, the effects of preinjury beta blocker status remain poorly understood. We sought to charact... (Source: SafetyLit)

An Inside Look at a Hospital Stay From Chest Pain
As a boy, soon after my mom would drop me off at Scranton (Pa.) fire headquarters to ride a shift on the ambulance with my dad, the bell would hit and the fire crews would be sent to a big wreck or two-alarm fire. So, at the age of 13, I was nicknamed "Black Cloud" by the firefighters because s--- happened whenever I showed up. I've had people go into anaphylactic shock on a train as I rode it to work, and once a homeless gentleman wandering on the tracks had both of his legs amputated by a train entering San Diego's main station as I stood there watching. I call it coincidental, but my friends and the JEMS staff...

Frostbite
With the cold months here people need to be made aware of injuries that may occur during these months. Exposure to a temperature below freezing usually leads to severe soft tissue damage (Figure 1). How does the body protect itself from cold? Thermoregulation The body has the ability to maintain a core body temperature by the process of thermoregulation. During extreme cold, the body receives a signal from sensory receptors. For example, there receptors are present in the hands or the feet (Figure 2). These sensory receptors will respond to the cold and send a signal up to the brain. The posterior hypothalamus is respo...

Miles Vaughan Williams obituary
My father, Miles Vaughan Williams, who has died aged 98, received global recognition for his work on heart rhythm problems. He realised that these were the commonest cause of sudden death, and his main contribution was to put the pharmacological treatment of arrhythmias on a firm scientific basis. He conducted pioneering work on beta-blockers, which have saved countless lives since. The Vaughan Williams index of anti-arrhythmic drugs – established in 1970 – is still used today. His work was recognised with an honorary fellowship of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and an honorary doctorate from the Sorbonn...
