Medication Trends in the Military: A Comparative Analysis of Prescribing Patterns Among Service Members Seen by a Pharmacist and Implications for Medical Readiness
CONCLUSIONS: Understanding medication patterns among ADSMs may be able to help health care professionals proactively address pharmacological challenges and optimize pharmaceutical use in this unique population. This knowledge can also aid in the development of training modules focused on medication side effects, interactions, counseling, and implications on military deployment for the most commonly used medications. Future examination into prescribing cascades and medication use related to proton-pump inhibitors, docusate, benzonatate, and muscle relaxants may identify opportunities to provide better care or lower cost.PMI...

Chronic cough (CC) can be debilitating and negatively affects patients ’ quality-of-life. Opioid antitussives, dextromethorphan, and benzonatate are commonly used for symptomatic relief of cough despite a lack of proven efficacy and safety evidence for CC. Benzonatate as a local anesthetic
ConclusionThis study demonstrates that benzonatate does act as a local anesthetic at the peripheral nerve, with sensory and motor nerve blockade. Benzonatate interacts with tetrodotoxin and Tween 80 to prolong nerve blockade. However, benzonatate causes significant myotoxicity, even at subtherapeutic concentrations. (Source: PLoS One)

73-Year-Old Man With Dyspnea and Cough
A 73-year-old man presented to clinic with dyspnea and cough of 2 years ’ duration. His medical comorbidities included type 2 diabetes well controlled with metformin and glipizide as well as hyperlipidemia treated with rosuvastatin. His cough was initially productive of small amounts of phlegm in the mornings but progressed to a bothersome dry cough occurring intermit tently throughout the day. Cough affected his ability to carry out conversations, with minimal improvement after trials of benzonatate, gabapentin, and antacids. (Source: Mayo Clinic Proceedings)

The patient was found in cardiac arrest within minutes of last being known well.
