Scientists Confirm That Stress Can Indeed Turn Hair Grey
When Ya-Chieh Hsu, professor of stem cell and regenerative biology at Harvard University and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, wanted to figure out exactly what makes hair turn grey, she started with an obvious, albeit anecdotal, culprit: stress. There are well-known historical examples of the connection between stress and hair greying—Marie Antoinette’s coif reportedly blanched after she was captured during the French Revolution—and studies have even linked stress in animals to greying hair. But for the first time, Hsu and her colleagues figured out the biological reason why stress saps the pigment out of...

I thought I needed alcohol to enjoy sex … but being sober made it so much better
Drunk sex was the only kind I could have with a new guy – until I quit drinking and focussed on sexual satisfactionI never expected I ’d be proud of myself for having a one-night stand. Before I quit drinking, I’d always say I “loved dating”. Truthfully, I loved drinking and drunk sex was often the logical conclusion of the evening. I’d convince myself that having four or five drinks on a Wednesday and going home with a guy I just met was an “investment” in trying to get into a relationship, because nothing screams girlfriend-material like abruptly leaving at 2am to avoid wetting the bed.I was drunk every s...

What Does the General Pediatrician Do When There Are Concerns for a Rare Disease?
Discussion Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare disorder. It is usually considered an autosomal recessive disorder but there is significant intra-familial variability. There are multiple genes (~20 currently) involved and it is believed that the phenotypic variability is due to “…differences in the total mutational load across different BBS associated genes….” It is a ciliopathy where mutation changes in proteins in the cilias causes problems in the cilia’s functioning particularly signaling. Cilia are important in signaling to maintain tissue and cellular homeostasis. Obviously screening of ...

Home Remedies: Patience to reduce bed-wetting
Most children outgrow bed-wetting on their own. If treatment is needed, it can be based on a discussion of options with your health care provider and identifying what will work best for your situation. If your child isn't especially bothered or embarrassed by an occasional wet night, lifestyle changes -- such as avoiding caffeine entirely [...] (Source: News from Mayo Clinic)

FDA warn ’ s Getinge ’ s Datascope about ongoing IABP issues
The FDA recently revealed a warning letter it sent to  Getinge‘s (PINK:GETI B) Datascope over ongoing issues uncovered during an inspection of its Mahwah, N.J.-based intra-aortic balloon pump production facilities last year, noting a number of continuing quality and validation issues that have not yet been appropriately managed. The federal watchdog said that it has received responses to the originally noted violations, but noted several issues in which the responses did not adequately address. In its first noted violation, the FDA dinged the company for a failing to perform design validation that includes producti...

ASK DR ELLIE: My nine-year-old daughter still wets the bed, will she ever overcome it?
DR ELLIE CANNON: The most important thing for families to know about bed wetting is that 99 per cent of children will grow out of it by adolescence. There are UK charities such as ERIC that offer support. (Source: the Mail online | Health)

Suppressing corrosion in primary aluminum-air batteries via oil displacement
Primary aluminum–air batteries boast high theoretical energy densities, but negative electrode corrosion irreversibly limits their shelf life. Most corrosion mitigation methods are insufficient or compromise power and energy density. We suppressed open-circuit corrosion by displacing electrolyte from the electrode surface with a nonconducting oil during battery standby. High power and energy density are enabled by displacing the oil with electrolyte for battery discharge. The underwater-oleophobic wetting properties of the designed cell surfaces allow for reversible oil displacement. We demonstrate this method in an ...
