Risk assessment of low-dose ethanol in food
Food Chem Toxicol. 2023 Jan 29:113633. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2023.113633. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA high variety of food contains low doses of ethanol which are sometimes difficult to identify by consumers (adults or children). However, even low doses of ethanol intake raises several toxicological concerns. In the present study, an enzymatic assay and an HS-GC/MS procedure were applied to determine the ethanol levels of 1260 samples from different food categories covering "nonalcoholic" beer, fruit juices/drinks, baked goods, bananas and baby foods. Based on these results, ethanol levels resulting from acute or chronic ...

Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 370: A Perspective Review on Understanding Drought Stress Tolerance in Wild Banana Genetic Resources of Northeast India
Robert Thangjam The enormous perennial monocotyledonous herb banana (Musa spp.), which includes dessert and cooking varieties, is found in more than 120 countries and is a member of the order Zingiberales and family Musaceae. The production of bananas requires a certain amount of precipitation throughout the year, and its scarcity reduces productivity in rain-fed banana-growing areas due to drought stress. To increase the tolerance of banana crops to drought stress, it is necessary to explore crop wild relatives (CWRs) of banana. Although molecular genetic pathways involved in drought stress tolerance of cultivated b...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 738: Non-Destructive Banana Ripeness Detection Using Shallow and Deep Learning: A Systematic Review
rgado-Dias The ripeness of bananas is the most significant factor affecting nutrient composition and demand. Conventionally, cutting and ripeness analysis requires expert knowledge and substantial human intervention, and different studies have been conducted to automate and substantially reduce human effort. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for the Systematic Reviews approach, 1548 studies were extracted from journals and conferences, using different research databases, and 35 were included in the final review for key parameters. These studies suggest the dominance of banana fingers as input data, a sensor camera as...

Associations Among Parents ’ Eating Behaviors, Feeding Practices, and Children’s Eating Behaviors
AbstractParental feeding practices influence children ’s eating behaviors, yet it is not well-understood whether parents’ own eating behaviors are associated with their feeding practices. The purpose of this study was to examine associations among parents’ eating behaviors, parental feeding practices, and children’s eating behaviors. A cross-se ctional study was conducted with 76 parents of children from an elementary school in Tampa, FL. Parents completed three questionnaires with topics related to parent eating behaviors, parental feeding practices, and children’s eating behaviors. Multiple regression analysis ...

Development of active packaging with chitosan, guar gum and watermelon rind extract: Characterization, application and performance improvement mechanism
The objective of this study was to make a film matrix containing chitosan (CS) and guar gum (GG), and to improve the physicochemical properties of the film using watermelon rind extract (WRE) as a cross-linker and active substance for the preservation of fresh-cut bananas. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy showed that the WRE and CG matrix formed intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions, which made the structure of the resulting films more compact. With increasing amounts of WRE, the mechanical properties of the films were significantly increased, bu...

Our favorite science news stories of 2022
This study shows nice weather can play a role as well, potentially even pushing a couple of rare monikers into prominence. During a museum renovation, archaeologists uncovered rows of graves containing 38 medieval friar skeletons that were buried near the ruins of Cambridge, England’s Augustinian friary. CAMBRIDGE ARCHAEOLOGICAL UNIT Medieval friars were riddled with parasites England’s 13th century friars lived a relatively sanitary existence. So why were they more likely to be riddled with parasites than their less hygienic contemporaries? The answer may lie in...
