Determination of multi-class pesticide residues in food commodities from Gujarat, India and evaluation of acute and chronic health risk
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Apr 6. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-26651-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn increasing concern for food safety has drawn attention to the overuse of pesticides, which pose a risk to public health. The present study determined 61 pesticide residues in 120 samples of cauliflower, green chili, cucumber, grapes, bananas and mangoes samples, and these were collected from markets in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surendranagar, Anand and Sabarkantha districts of Gujarat state, India. The samples were extracted and analyzed using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry ...

The core fungal microbiome of banana (Musa spp.)
Here, we report a metabarcoding (ITS2) study to define the common core fungal microbiome (mycobiome) of healthy Musa spp. (bananas and plantains). To identify a list of 21 core fungal taxa, we first characterised the effects of edaphic conditions and host genotype – two factors that are likely to differ between farms – on the diversity of fungal communities in bulk soil and seven plant compartments. This experiment facilitated shortlisting of core ‘candidates’, which were then elevated to full core status if also found to frequent a wide-range of field-grown Musa spp. and exhibit hub-like characteristics in network...

Antixenosis by a resistant < em > Musa < /em > cultivar to stem borer < em > Odoiporus longicollis < /em > attack and expression of microsomal α-amylase by the pest
J Biosci. 2023;48:6.ABSTRACTBanana pseudo-stem weevil (BPW) Odoiporus longicollis Olivier is a serious pest of Musa cultivars which completes its lifecycle as an internal parasite in the pseudo-stem of susceptible host plants. The larval stage of BPW is destructive and difficult to control as larvae are endophytic. Plantains (bananas), resistant to infestation by BPW, exhibited antixenosis against the larvae. Experimental maintenance of the larvae for 4 days in the live pseudo-stem of the resistant plantain resulted in the disruption of carbohydrate metabolism and imbalance of protein-free amino acid turnover. The pseudo-s...

Bio-priming of banana tissue culture plantlets with endophytic Bacillus velezensis EB1 to improve Fusarium wilt resistance
In this study, an endophytic bacterium Bacillus velezensis EB1 was isolated and characterized. EB1 shows remarkable in vitro antagonistic activity against Foc with an inhibition rate of 75.43% and induces significant morphological and ultrastructural changes and alterations in the hyphae of Foc. Colony-forming unit (c.f.u.) counting and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that EB1 could colonize both the surface and inner tissues of banana tissue culture plantlets. Banana tissue culture plantlets of late rooting stage bioprimed with EB1 could efficiently ward off the invasive of Foc. The bio-priming effect could ma...

Risk assessment of low-dose ethanol in food
Food Chem Toxicol. 2023 Jan 29;173:113633. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2023.113633. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA high variety of food contains low doses of ethanol which are sometimes difficult to identify by consumers (adults or children). However, even low doses of ethanol intake raises several toxicological concerns. In the present study, an enzymatic assay and an HS-GC/MS procedure were applied to determine the ethanol levels of 1260 samples from different food categories covering "nonalcoholic" beer, fruit juices/drinks, baked goods, bananas and baby foods. Based on these results, ethanol levels resulting from acute or chro...
