Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 6765: NFC-Enabled Dual-Channel Flexible Printed Sensor Tag
In this study, we designed a printed circuit board (PCB) module (13 mm × 13 mm) for near-field communication-enabled sensor tags with both electrical resistance and capacitance read-out channels that enables dual-channel sensing. As part of the wireless sensor tag, a square antenna pattern was printed directly on a flexible poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate and integrated into the PCB module to demonstrate a dual-channel temperature and ethylene gas sensor. The temperature and ethylene sensors were printed using a positive temperature coefficient ink and a tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticle ink, respect...

All-naturally structured tough, ultrathin, and washable dual-use composite for fruits preservation with high biosafety evaluation
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Jul 13:125828. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.125828. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis work develops a sustainable and global strategy to enhance fruit preservation efficacy. The dual-use composite coating or film comprises silk fibroin/cellulose nanocrystals (SF/CNC) with superior ductility through a synergistic plasticizing effect of glycerol and natural aloe-emodin powder (AE) as antimicrobial agents. To confirm our strategy, two common fruit preservation materials (edible surface coating-SCA-CS; packaging film-SCA-PF) and five different fruits (strawberries, bananas, apples, blueberries, and g...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 6387: Developing a Colorimetric Equation and a Colorimetric Model to Create a Smartphone Application That Identifies the Ripening Stage of Lady Finger Bananas in Thailand
This article develops a colorimetric equation and a colorimetric model to create a smartphone application that identifies the ripening stage of the lady finger banana (LFB) (Musa AA group ’Kluai Khai’, กล้วยไข่ “gluay kai” in Thai). The mobile application photographs an LFB, automatically analyzes the color of the banana, and tells the user the number of days until the banana ripens and the number of days the banana will remain edible. The application is cal...

Opuntia ficus indica mucilage coatings regulate cell wall softening enzymes and delay the ripening of banana fruit stored at retail conditions
This study aimed to examine the efficacy of Opuntia ficus indica mucilage (OFIM) edible coating in minimizing softening in bananas under retail conditions. Mucilage was extracted from freshly harvested prickly pear cladodes and dried into a powder. Phenolic compounds in OFIM powder were quantified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). OFIM concentrations (1, 2 and 3 % (w/v)) were prepared, and their physicochemical properties were examined. The prepared coatings were applied to harvested banana fruit by dipping and stored at room temperature for 12 days. During the experiment, several parameters were measu...

Antimicrobial mechanisms and secondary metabolite profiles of Streptomyces hygroscopicus subsp. hygroscopicus 5 –4 against banana fusarium wilt disease using metabolomics
Fusarium wilt of bananas (FWB) is seriously affecting the sustainable development of the banana industry and is caused by the devastating soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (Foc TR4). Biological control is a promising strategy for controlling Fusarium wilt in bananas. We previously identified Streptomyces hygroscopicus subsp. hygroscopicus 5–4 with strong antifungal activity against the FWB. The most possible antimicrobial mechanism of strain 5–4 was explored using the metabolomics approach, light microscopy imaging, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The membrane integrity and...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 4456: Antifungal Potential of Melaleuca alternifolia against Fungal Pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4
This study investigated the antifungal activities of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil (TTO) and hydrosol (TTH) against Foc TR4 and their bioactive components. The potential of TTO and TTH in inhibiting the growth of Foc TR4 was evaluated in vitro using agar well diffusion and spore germination assays. Compared to the chemical fungicide, TTO effectively suppressed the mycelial growth of Foc TR4 at 69%. Both the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of TTO and TTH were established at 0.2 µg/µL and 50% v/v, respectively, suggesting the fung...

Preparation of water ‐based flexography printing ink by KMnO4 modified activated carbon for fruit ripening control application
The comparison of banana shelf-life in the packaging between unprinted PP film (neat PP), printed PP film using activated carbon ink and modified activated carbon ink. AbstractEthylene is a type of gas that fruits and vegetables can produce naturally. The release of ethylene gas from fruits and vegetables causes them to ripen and undergo physical, chemical and biological changes, such as changes in the appearance in terms of shape and colour, changes in firmness and texture, changes in taste and changes in nutritional value. Furthermore, it also facilitates the growth of microorganisms. These changes lead to spoilage if th...

Lignocellulose nanofibrils/guar gum-based ethylene scavenging composite film integrated with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for food packaging
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 May 25:125031. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.125031. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEthylene, a ripening hormone, is critical in limiting the shelf life of fresh produce, specifically climacteric fruits and vegetables. A simple and benign fabrication approach is used to transform sugarcane bagasse, an agro-industrial waste into lignocellulosic nanofibrils (LCNF). In this investigation, biodegradable film was fabricated using LCNF (extracted from sugarcane bagasse) and guar gum (GG) which was reinforced with zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8/zeolite. The LCNF/GG film not only acts as a biodegrad...

Development and characterization of active packaging based on chitosan/chitin nanofibers incorporated with scallion flower extract and its preservation in fresh-cut bananas
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 May 23;242(Pt 3):125045. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.125045. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to develop a novel active packaging using chitosan (CS) and esterified chitin nanofibers (CF) combined with different contents (1, 2 and 4 wt% on CS basis) of scallion flower extract (SFE) to protect banana samples. The addition of CF significantly improved the barrier and mechanical properties of the CS films (p < 0.05) due to hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the addition of SFE not only improved the physical properties of the CS film but also improved t...

Revealing the different resistance mechanisms of banana'Guijiao 9' to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 using comparative proteomic analysis
In this study, iTRAQ (isobaric Tags for Relative and Absolute quantitation) was used to analyze the xylem proteomic data of banana roots from the resistant variety 'Guijiao 9' and susceptible variety 'Williams', and the differences in protein accumulation profiles between these two varieties at 24, 48, and 72 h after infection with Foc4 were compared. The identified proteins were analyzed by the protein WGCNA (Weighted Gene Correlation Network Analysis), and the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were verified by qRT-PCR experiments. Proteomic analysis showed that there were differences in the protein accumulation pr...
