Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea Strain In Hawaii A First For U.S.
A drug-resistant cluster of gonorrhea infections in Hawaii have health officials worried that the sexually transmitted disease could soon prove untreatable.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week that an antibiotic-resistant strain was discovered earlier this year in seven patients in Honolulu. All the individuals ― six men and one woman ― were successfully treated using the CDC-recommended two-drug combination of ceftriaxone and azithromycin. Laboratory tests, however, showed the strain had “decreased susceptibility to ceftriaxone and very high-level resistance to azithromycin,”...

In 2011, the United Kingdom stopped requiring that dogs brought into the country be inspected for ticks. Earlier this year, several dogs tested positive for babesia, a malaria-like disease transmitted to ticks that previously had only been found in foreign. These dogs had never left the U.K.
While babesiosis is a new worry to U.K. dog owners, it's been a threat to human beings for years -- it just hasn't become a health-scare-of-the-week like Zika, West Nile, avian and swine flu. Most...

Antibiotic-Resistant Gonorrhea Is A Looming Threat
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that Neisseria gonorrhoeae ― that is, the bacteria that causes gonorrhea ― could be developing resistance to our last-line antibiotics that treat it.
The CDC’s current gold standard treatment for gonorrhea is a combination of two drugs, azithromycin and ceftriaxone, to ensure that if one drug doesn’t kill the bacteria, the other will finish the job. Now, a rise in antibiotic resistance among these two bacteria since 2014 has experts worried.
“History has taught us that this bacteria has the ability to develop resistance to...
