Comparative diagnostic accuracy of transcranial Doppler and contrast-enhanced transthoracic echocardiography for the diagnosis of patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect
CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic accuracy of CE-TTE appears favorable, and this imaging test may identify patients who may be missed if only TCD is used to screen patients with suspected PFO/ASD. Accordingly, CE-TTE is recommended as an adjunct diagnostic modality for all patients with a high pre-test probability of PFO/ASD and right-to-left shunt.PMID:38563605 | DOI:10.23736/S0031-0808.24.05123-1 (Source: Panminerva Medica)

15-Year Analysis of Surgical Approaches and Outcomes for Coarctation in 132 Neonates and Infants
The objective of this study is to evaluate operative characteristics and outcomes of all neonates and infants who underwent surgical repair of coarctation of the aorta or hypoplastic aortic arch at University of Florida from 2006 to 2021, inclusive, either in isolation or with concomitant repair of atrial septal defect (ASD) and/or ventricular septal defect (VSD). A retrospective review was performed of 132 patients aged 0 –1 year who underwent surgical repair of aortic coarctation or hypoplastic aortic arch between 2006 and 2021, inclusive, either in isolation or with concomitant repair of ASD and/or VSD. Patients were ...

Patent Foramen Ovale and Atrial Septal Defect
Patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defects (ASDs) are two types of interatrial communications with unique clinical presentations and management strategies. The PFO is a normal part of fetal development that typically closes shortly after birth but may persist in as many as 25% to 30% of adults. The communication between atria may result in paradoxic embolism and embolic stroke. On the other hand, ASDs (anatomically defined as secundum, primum, sinus venosus, and coronary sinus in order of prevalence) typically result in right heart volume overload and are often associated with other congenital defects. The diagno...

Cardiovascular physical examination as a screening tool for congenital heart disease in newborns at a teaching hospital in Ghana
CONCLUSION: Cardiovascular physical examination at birth is an effective and inexpensive screening tool for detecting CHD in newborns, which can easily be utilised in low-resource settings.FUNDING: None declared.PMID:38504760 | PMC:PMC10846649 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v57i2.10 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)
